The Warrior

There was once a noble Warrior in a very old king’s land.  He was very trusted by the king and everyone who knew him. This Warrior was known for slaying many great monsters and terribly cruel armies. He was considered a hero to all of the kingdom’s villagers. Yet, the Warrior, being a modest man, never cared to brag about his many good deeds because he felt it was never right. But that just made the king and the villagers love him more. Women from all over the land tried to become his wife, but the Warrior refused time after time because he could never find the one.

Well one day, the King called the Warrior into the throne room. The King was very old now. His hair was fading and his skin was constantly getting paler and paler by the day. He was becoming freakishly frail. Everyone knew his time was short and that he needed an heir to the throne, but he had no children of his own.

Well anyway, the King called the Warrior into his throne room one day. “Dearest friend of mine, you have been my most trusted companion for many, many years. I am afraid to tell you that I am dying, but you probably know this.” The Warrior only nodded in agreement and let the King carry on. “I need someone to rule after me and to keep this kingdom running after I pass. Sadly, I have no children or wife to take my place.” Then he paused… “I find no one better to do it then you.”

The Warrior only stared at the King in bewilderment. “Why me, your highness,” the Warrior asked, still shocked. “Well what do you think?! I trust none other but you. You have what it takes to be a King! You’ve done things that heroes couldn’t think of accomplishing! You’ve fought beasts that even I haven’t heard of. The people of the kingdom adore you as well. You’re suitable than even I!” The Warrior only continued to stare at the King as if he were a complete madman.

“But, I request a task from you first,” the King continued. “For this is probably the last task my frail body will ever be able to ask.” The King paused for a moment, catching his breath and then continued.

“There is a land beyond ours in the east that holds a very powerful beast. It is said that slaying this beast and possessing its blood will allow you to have wisdom beyond all other beings…..” He paused. “I request that you slay this beast and come back with its blood, and then you shall be named King.”

The Warrior didn’t agree to do it at first.  The thought of him slaying a creature, so innocent, was horrible in his eyes. He found himself to be wise enough without a beast’s blood, but he never told the King that, for no one denied the King’s request.

So, the next morning, as soon as the sun touched the horizon, the Warrior set off on his quest. He had his sword with him and a sack of food with him along the way.  The Warrior walked for miles and miles toward the east, just as the King had said. He walked and walked until he was very tired and thirsty. So then, he ate the food that was in the small sack. Then he started his journey again.
