A week after Ms Hendrick's death, it was time for her funeral. Effie locked herself in her room, crying. Her mascara was smudged all over her face. Charlotte knocked on Effie's door. "Effie, come on out. Are you even dressed?" she asked. Effie didn't answer the door. She sat on her bed, ashamed of herself, even though it really wasn't her fault. "Effie, come on, please..." Charlotte begged desperately. Effie still did not answer. She looked straight at the wall, wishing to suddenly die. Effie heard Charlotte chattering with a man. "Miss Effie, you must come out, it is time for your mother's funeral, you can't just not show up" he said, knocking on the door. Effie quickly went to her bathroom and washed her face clean. "I'm not going to bother putting on mascara again" she said to the mirror. She ran to her door to open it. Her long black dress floated behind her. Effie unlocked the door. "Please, uncle, I want to stay in my room!" Effie begged. "Effie! Do you have no heart? Do you have no consideration for your mother's feelings? I'm sure she would be hurt if you didn't show up at her funeral!" Uncle Joe yelled at Effie. Charlotte gave her an apologetic glance and went down the stairs. Uncle Joe followed, grabbing Effie's wrist.

"We are here for the funeral of Ms Ellen Hendrick, who has been mysteriously murdered last week. We shall start off with a prayer to ask God to look after this kind and generous woman" the priest said. During the entire funeral, Effie felt guilty, ashamed and miserable. After the speeches, it was Effie's turn to make her speech. She went on the stage. But Effie did not say anything. Everyone in the funeral waited for her speech. She cleared her throat nervously, but still said nothing. Charlotte gave her a thumbs-up and a smile to encourage her. Effie still did not say anything. "I-I-I'm sorry!" she stuttered with tears streaming down her cheeks. Everyone turned at the person next to them, talking in confusion. "What does she mean she's sorry?" people asked each other. Effie spotted the Spirit of the Dead ghost hiding in the trees. It was pitch black, no eyes or mouth or nose, as usual, and as skinny as a twig and as tall as a giant tree. She shrieked in horror with more tears streaming down her cheeks. "No! Please! It belongs in the fires of hell!" she screamed. Everyone started talking. "She's possessed! She's gone mental!" people said. Effie sat down on her knees with her eyes shut. "I didn't do anything! I swear! It was the Spirit of the Dead ghost!" she cried out. Uncle Joe sat up from his chair and went to her. He bent down to whisper in her ear. "Effie, what do you think you're doing?! This is your mother's funeral! Are you possessed or what? Get up now, stop crying and make your speech!" he scowled harshly. Effie ignored him and sat there on the stage, crying. He gave up and took his seat, not bothering with her anymore. "She okay?" Uncle Joe's friend, Noah, asked him. "She's gone mad, I don't know what's wrong with her" Uncle Joe replied. Effie carried her long black dress ran off the stage and into her house. She didn't care anymore, she just wanted to be alone. Effie went to her room and cried, forgetting to lock the door. Charlotte entered Effie's room without permission. "Now THAT was a scene. What did you do that for?" Charlotte asked, sitting on Effie's bed next to her. Effie buried her face into her hands. Charlotte stayed with Effie and heard her out to give her company.
