I breathed in the scent of vintage books and revered in the crinkling sound as I turned the page of Hogwarts: A History. My close friend Camilla had been so kind to lend me her mother's old copy of the book to read before I started my first term at the school.
I was a half-blood, my mother being a muggle and my father being a wizard. My mom wasn't particularly fond of the whole magic thing; to be honest, it kind of freaked her out when my dad would use magic so he wouldn't use it often. With my mother's bias, for many years I believed my views on it were the same as her's, until I became 13 and started finding myself and my own views of things. I met a friend over the summer, from England, who got me interested in her school, Hogwarts. She told me all about it and the different houses, how she was a Ravenclaw and she suspected I might be too. After much discussion with my parents, my father agreed it might not be such a bad idea. Being a wizard himself, he had more of an open mind to the idea. Although my mother didn't at all relish in my transfer to Britain, she seemed to understand that it was my choice.
Having much to catch up on, I did my best to learn as much as I could before the first day of school so I wouldn't look like a complete idiot being the new kid. Camilla was great though with easing my nerves and teaching me everything I needed to know.
"You're not going to spend the whole day inside are you? It's beautiful outside." Cori, Camilla's witch mother asked me, peeking into the tent. She peered down seeing the book I was reading and nodded her head. "Although I do understand the interest in what you are reading."
"I'll be out in a sec" I smiled and finished up the chapter. After a moment, I joined Camilla outside, who was talking with a red headed boy.
"I mean I see why he's popular, but he's not so special." The boy said.
"Exactly!" Camilla agreed. "He is a great seeker though."
"And great with the ladies" He added.
"Who?" I asked, trying to join the conversation.
"Oh, Mia this is Fred Weasley." Camilla introduced, suddenly acknowledging my presence.
So this was the Fred I had heard so much about. He seemed pretty decent. Personally I didn't find him overly attractive but I could see the appeal for Camilla.
"Nice to finally meet you" I said, instantly regretting the last bit. I didn't mean it to say much but it had just implied that I had heard of him before and seeing as I didn't have much for other magical friends, obviously it had to have been Camilla who had told me about him. They were pretty good friends though, right? So hopefully he wouldn't think much of it other than that he's her friend so of course she would tell me about him.
"Yeah, sure thing" He nodded at me then turned back to Camilla. "Anyways, I'm going to get back to the tent. Wouldn't want George to eat up the last bit of sweets without me." He winked.
"Oh yeah, alright then, I guess I'll see you at the game then. Where are you guys seated?" She asked.
"Pretty far up. But I don't mind really, I'm just happy we got to come in the first place. See you!" He waved and walked away.
"So that was the famous Fred." I said quietly once I figured he was out of earshot.
"Yeah... I'm pretty sure he just sees me like Ginny though." She paused, "Or at the very least just one of Ginny's friends."
"Well, you never know. It could always happen." I said trying to be encouraging.
He did seem a couple years older than us though, so that wasn't exactly working to her advantage. But age can be just a small factor in a relationship sometimes anyways. "Come on let's go see what's going on." I suggested, nodding towards a couple of wizards performing for money, and a set of booths selling peculiar things.
