After my first day of classes, Luna, Camilla and I stayed up and talked, discussing the first day of school. Neither of them could believe what I had said to Draco. Surprisingly that didn't end up the main focus of our conversation though. When I told them of the skrewts and expressed my interest in them Camilla wasn't at all surprised saying it was typical of Hagrid. He always fancied vicious creatures. She then went on to tell that because of that many had assumed at first in second year, that he had been associated with the basilisk. When I didn't follow, she began explaining the situation of second year and what the basilisk was.
"So...wait...you're telling me that there's a giant snake in the basement of this place?" I asked, confused by the story.
"Yes," Luna backed Camilla up. "That was my first year at Hogwarts when Harry Potter went into the Chamber of Secrets"
"And it's still there now?" I questioned in disbelief.
Camilla shrugged. "I don't think anyone really knows what happened to it after it died. But I would assume that it is still there since I haven't heard anything otherwise."
"Can...can we see?" I asked hopeful.
Camilla stared at me for a long while in bewilderment. I think after many moments she realized that I was serious. "No. Why would you even consider that?"
"I don't know..." I shrugged. "I like snakes. I think they're misunderstood. Besides, you said Harry killed him so if he's dead he can't eat us. And even if he wasn't, Fawkes blinded him right? So it's not like we would have to worry about dying either way."
"I highly doubt he's alive." Camilla retorted and sighed. "I can't believe you're actually considering going down to the Chamber of Secrets. Anyone wanting to face the basilisk dead or alive has to be crazy."
"Or have a hunger for knowledge!" I said enthusiastically, playing the Ravenclaw card. "Hardly anyone knows much about the creature. Imagine everything we could learn about him if we could train him."
"What do you mean 'if we could train him'?" Camilla emphasized. "I'm telling you he's dead."
"Then you've got nothing to worry about, come on, just please come?" I begged.
"But it'll smell like death down there with that rotting carcass of a beast. I mean think about it, it's had a year to oxidize and whatnot."
"Well, at least think of what we could learn from the chamber of secrets. And even his bones could tell us what a basilisk is like too."
"I don't know..."
I suddenly got an idea. "What if there's some kind of like different plant species down there to be discovered? What if it turns out to be a really fun adventure?" Camilla was a sucker for herbology.
She thought about it a moment then agreed. "Fine, I'll go with you."
"Me too" Luna added, though I had a feeling from the beginning that she would.
"But I still think it's an awful idea." Camilla added. "I mean, how are we even supposed to get into the Chamber of Secrets in the first place?"
I shrugged. "Can't we ask Harry?"
"I don't know him very well. I'm mostly friends with his roommates Seamus and Dean." She said. "I suppose I could ask them to ask him though..."
"Yes!! Thank you!" I said excitedly and hugged her.
A couple days later we found ourselves in the girl's bathroom with the ghost, Moaning Myrtle.
"You really don't want to go down there," she warned, "I've only heard awful things of the basilisk." She began to sniffle as the tears ran down her face. Or at least they would have if she was still living and could produce tears. "It killed me you know! Those evil yellow eyes killed me!"
