Avery's POV
Knock knock.
"Avery dear, can you get the door?" My mum shouts to me from her room.
I sigh and walk towards the old, battered, piece of wood we call our door. The hinges creak open with several squeaks.
"Avery!" A voice squeals. I get a glimpse of auburn hair before the girl rushes to hug me. After several seconds of a spine-crushing grip, she releases me and I get a look at who it is.
A pointed nose, a sprinkle of freckles, bright green eyes.
"Savanna!" I scream. Her eyes sparkle and she flashes me a big, cheeky grin.
For the past year Savanna has been in Australia with her parents, who are world renowned marine biologists. Now she looked, older than ever, and was now taller than me. I was usually the tallest in the group.
"How was Australia?" I ask her.
"Oh my gosh Avery, it was amazing! The sharks got so close to us! It was really hot there though, and,"
I zoned out on whatever else she said because my sights were set on a single brown owl on our driveway.
"Avery!"
"What?" I snapped back into reality.
"Did you hear what I asked you?" Savanna says to me her green eyes annoyed.
"Um, no."
"I said, have you seen Jordan, Anna , or Harper recently?"
"I slept over Harper's the other day, but I haven't seen Jordan or Anna since school ended."
Harper, Jordan, Anna, Savanna, and I have been friends since we were like born. Our moms were all best friends, until Jordan's mom passed away two years. It wasn't really the same after that, with the moms hang out and the kids hang out.
Savanna nods, then shivers.
"It sure is cold for being early July," She says then shivers again. I can almost hear her teeth chattering.
"Here, come inside." I tell her, "Maybe we can call the others."
Within five minutes, Savanna and I are cuddled on the couch watching Say Yes To The Dress with hot cocoa and Jordan, Anna, and Harper on their way here.
We hear the doorbell ring and my dog, Jackie howls at the top of her lungs.
Before I can get up to let them in, Savanna screams, "COME IN!"
The door screeches open and closed and three girls come running our way.
"SAVANNA!" They shout in unison. The haven't seen her in a year either.
Anna is average height, a little bit shorter than me, with black hair and hazel eyes. Jordan looks very similar to her, but has the soft brown eyes her hair is longer, Harper has beach blond hair and the brightest blue eyes you could think of. She's the shortest, resting at only 4,5.
Then there's me, with carmel brown hair and intense gray eyes. The other always tease me about my eyes, but I actually think they're kind of pretty.
" Not to scare you or anything Avery, but there was a black owl on your roof." Jordan explains to me.
"That's odd, I saw a brown one on my driveway earlier." I say, talking to myself more that I am to them.
"My dad shooed one away from the window yesterday." Anna tells us.
"Me too." Harper confesses.
Savanna nods. "I haven't been home in a year."
We all giggle.
"How was being and Aussie for a year?" Harper jokes to Savanna.
As Savanna tells them all about Australia, my gaze wanders to an owl pecking on our living room window, so quietly, I barely head it.
The owl flies to my door and drops a letter through the mail slot.
Savanna must of noticed my staring.
"And then the dolphin started...... Avery what are you looking at?"
I point to the letter.
"Yeah, a letter. You get those everyday." Jordan says.
"N-no an owl just dropped it in there." I tell them, my eyes still set on the mail slot.
"Haha very funny."
"I'm not kidding." I glare at them. I know my glares always get them.
Together, we walk over to the letter.
I pick it up. Defined owl claw marks and scarred all over it.
They all look at me like their expecting me to go "GOT YA!"
"Open it." Anna says firmly.
I rip it open and read the letter.
