I took a small deep breath and began taking small steps across the dirty sidewalks. The first day of school. It was like a bad show playing through my head over and over.
My body shivered over the thought of having once again, a terrible year. Being the new kid always sucked, especially if you're a shy and awkward kid like me.
My dark brown eyes looked straight up at the gigantic school. Its colour was slightly red with a tint of orange.
The bricks were solid and sturdy, not one single crack or chip. I wobbled up the stairs and into the freshly painted black doors.
I guess everybody was pretty new, I mean, wouldn't they be? Unless they all knew each other in their old school. I gulped.
There was definitely going to be tons of students. My hair was tied up in a bun and bounced as I walked through the wide halls and into the office to pick up my schedule.
"Lily Green please," I spoke with a rather quiet tone.
The secretary had a wide smile on her face shaded in pink lip gloss, she looked through a drawer of files and pulled out an average sized paper.
I grabbed it from her hands slowly as she handed it to me.
"Have a nice day, Lily," she said, waving goodbye.
I walked to my locker and tried out the combination.
Nothing.
I gave it another whirl.
Still nothing.
"Need some help?"
A voice beside me said. I turned my head slightly to the right, just to check who was talking. A boy, he looked like my grade. He had brown hair but not too dark and that was the only thing I noticed before speaking out loud.
"No, of course not. Just the locker being silly," I tried my best to sound witty, I wasn't going to be weak and just ask for help.
Chuckling, he turned back to his locker and carried on. Pfft. What was he going to do to fix it? Just a stupid locker combination that didn't work. I turned it once again and it gave a small sound, opening the locker.
"Told ya," I said, looking as smug as possible.
The time was short, only three minutes to stop by and get your books, then go to class. Rushing, I stuffed some books in the locker, and took out the first book that I needed for my subject. History, this was going to be awful.
Sure, loads of people love history. Me? Well, we can just say I'd rather spend my day washing a pair of dirty socks than going to history class.
Time in History passed by slowly, getting slower each time I looked at the clock. Then it was Gym, Math and finally Lunch.
The lunch bell rang horribly loud, making one of my ears deaf for a bit. Never was I going to be ready to face this, but I had to and I know what I had to do.
"Yes, the pizza please. The chocolate milk....and...ah yes. The blueberry muffin! Thanks," I said to the lunch lady.
I took the lunch tray and headed straight for the girls bathroom, getting in the biggest stall there was. Never would I dare sit in that cafeteria without friends and always people staring me down as I nibble on my food.
I heard high heels walk across the floor, followed by 2 more high heels. Quietly, I listened and began to sit on the closed toilet seat with my legs crossed.
"My make-up, it's so bright today. I was going for a more pretty but sweet girl kind of look," one said. She had a bratty voice and sounded like she was chewing a bucket of gum.
"Oh my gosh, we need to be there for football tryouts. For sure," another said.
My eyes widened as they came near my stall but headed back to the mirrors. I munched on my muffin, making no sound at all. What felt like forever, they finally left after checking their make-up thousands of times.
My food was already finished and I walked out, my sneakers making small squeaking sounds on the hall floors.
What I plan to do for the rest of the year is to hide from everyone and stay as low as possible so nobody gets into drama with you.
Lots of boys and girls were walking out of the cafeteria heading to different places. The boy who talked to me this morning came out looking around at everybody.
Slowly, I walked back down the hall quickly but no chance. He was already walking right behind me.
"You're Lily, right?" He said.
He had a small accent, or maybe a big one. I couldn't tell, but for sure he sounded like he was British.
"Yes... how do you know that?" I made an odd face but still continued walking.
"It said on your combination card, I have a good memory, just not the best," He replied.
"Mm-hm. Alrighty then,"
"My name's Daniel, if you, didn't know or anything,"
"Thanks for the heads-up, I will catch you around,"
From that day forward, Daniel and me were the best of friends. Autumn flew by quickly and you could already see small snowflakes falling from the light blue tinted skies. I awoke to a windy morning on the thirty-first of October.
Rubbing my tired eyes, I rolled out of the tiny bed that I slept in and headed off to get into my Halloween costume. We had to wear ours to school and have an enormous dance with every grade in the gym, the event was supposedly 'amazing'.
Gently, I took black face paint and drew whiskers on my cheeks, and meowed at my mirror. The most plain costume ever, but it was simple and efficient to do.
The weather outside blew my dark brown hair side to side as I tried to rush to get inside.
Arriving in just a couple of minutes, I skipped some steps and headed to my locker, opening it and getting what subject was needed.
Classes, classes and more classes.
The day was finally over; and I was exhausted over all the work I had assigned. School was a gigantic hassle, and graduation was just still 4 years away.
"A cat. Very cliché," Dan said, walking towards me. He was wearing what seemed like bits of hay and a chewed up hat.
"And what are you? A farmer?" I said, crossing my arms.
"Not a farmer, a scarecrow," He said while fixing his crooked hat.
I nodded slightly and before I could open my lips, the principal began speaking.
"ATTENTION! ATTENTION! Is this thing even on? OK. Hello students and faculty! We will be starting our Halloween dance at 8pm tonight! Be there or be square! Have a spooky Halloween! OoOoOoO!"
Our principal was usually this mad, always talking to students about her new plans, even though nobody really cared about it all. I felt bad for her sometimes, but I guess that she just wipes it off her shoulders and continues on.
"You going?" Dan asked me.
"Sure, I mean, what else do I have to do? Homework?" The thought of it made me sick; I had a headache already thinking about it all.
"Well, I guess I will see you there. I'm only coming for the snacks anyways," He smiled lightly and walked outside the school doors.
Nobody was ever home when I was there, my parents usually were on business trips and I'd be alone all the time.
The only thing I was looking forward to was my birthday, which was on January 7th.
Everything was already planned for it, and it was going to be absolutely perfect.
