"H-he dumped me." I cry down the phone the second my best friend, Megan, answers. My tissue supply was running low and I needed a shoulder to cry on, even if she was all the way in America.
"Sophia, calm down and say that again. You know the reception is rubbish." She says in a soothing tone. I could hear the sounds of happy children and animals roaring in the background as it was only five in America, making in ten o'clock here in England. I know, it's a long way to go just for work experience, but her aunt works there, with the lizards, and she never does anything small. It's always big, big, big.
"Brendan." I say between hiccups. "He dumped me." I wipe my eyes and blow my nose loudly in my tissue. Damn it, my last one. Can life get any worse? Don't answer that.
"Aww baby, I know you're hurt but I did tell you he was only using you." She says, even though I couldn't see her, I could imagine her forehead creased with worry but that slightly hint of 'I told you so' in her eyes. She was in work experience in New York zoo and I missed her like hell.
"I should have listened to you Meggles." I sigh, feeling pathetic and selfish from making her talk to me when she's at work. "I miss you so much."
"I know, I miss you too babe. My advice is to go and get some ice cream and watch a comedy on my Netflix account. I know you have the password because those actions and comedies are popping up in my recommended bar again. You know I like documentaries and romances." She says, in a playful patronising tone. I giggle, sniffle and then wipe my nose on my sleeve because I ran out of tissues. Don't judge me.
"Damn it, I thought I was being sneaky. Thank you Megan, you're the best. I love you, please come home soon." I smile weakly at the phone and it crackles and I just catch her last words before it cuts of completely.
"I love you too, two more days." Her words replay in my head as I drag myself out of bed and into the car. I was a loner at school and she was pretty much my only friend. I should have known it was fishy when one of the popular guys came up to me and asked me out, I know it was dumb but I was so caught up in the moment. He dumped me when he found out I wasn't as 'easy' as he thought I was. Megan knew it though, but she couldn't slap some sense into me because she half way around the world and threats don't sound so scary when you only hear half the words.
I'm taking her advice though, people must think I'm crazy. Stood in the local twenty-four hour supermarket, wearing a panda onesie and buying three massive tubs of Ben and Jerry's ice-cream. And yeah, I did get my brother to hack her Netflix account because out parents are too cheap for that shit and I knew she wouldn't be mad. My favourite type of film was action, when I was little I used to spy on my brother and parents then dress all in black and steal my neighbours cat. It gave me a lot of scars but it was so worth it. That cat loved me really.
I grab a bottle of milkshake and slam the fridge door shut and the next thing I know, I hear the sound of glass smashing. At first I think it was me, but the door is perfectly unbroken. Then I hear the gun shots.
