“Cell phones. I can call my mom, she’s a custodian here.” Courtney suddenly chimed in.
“Wow, that’s actually helpful.” I responded to her, extremely surprised at her helpful answer.
We all automatically scrambled for our cell phones and almost all at the same time groaned.
“How is there no service!” Jeff yelled shoving his phone back in his pocket.
“Yeah that is really odd. Maybe a tower is out somewhere.” Courtney mumbled.
How was it people like Michael and Courtney didn’t freak out in times of…chaos? Was it a weird freakazoid gene?
“Ok, let’s split up and try to find an unlocked classroom with a phone in it a landline should work.” Tucker had his hands in the air trying to work out a plan. It looked more like he was trying to orchestrate a sports play or something. Jocks, always had to talk with their hands to emphasize everything. I rolled my eyes but thought it was actually a pretty good plan. I mean we had nothing else.
“And we’ve got to try all the exits. Maybe one of the doors will be unlocked.” I piped in.
“Oh hell no!” Jeff screamed. He seemed really panicky.
“Did you assholes forget we have a psycho killer amongst us? I mean one of us shot Orbison! I’m not going with anyone. I’ll go alone if it comes to that.” Jeff started pointing at us and backing towards the door.
He was absolutely right. I mean I know I didn’t shoot Mr. Orbison, I didn’t even know how to hold a gun. Let alone shoot one in the dark. I started looking around the group of us, starting to accuse them all of being untrustworthy…even Tucker. I mean he had his hand on my leg during the blackout, but then took it off momentarily as the gun fired. Actually, now that I think about it, it was more than likely Tucker! Trying to build an alibi with flirting with me.
“But if we do split up and one of us gets knocked off, then we know who the killer is, automatically.” Michael stood up starting to take a vested interest in the conversation. He was a tall, lanky kid. I had never really looked at him before. Just glances and usually moved to the opposite side of the hall when we crossed paths. It sounds horrible but he was really freaky looking, big holes in his ear lobes, black eye liner, long black hair and gothy type clothes with skulls on them. He was the epitome of what a serial killer looked like.
“Yeah you would like that you fricken weirdo! No one in their right mind is going to partner with you.” Jeff snorted at Michael.
“You’re so predictable you insensitive prick. If it’s all the same I would rather we go together, as a group. It’ll take a while but we’ll check all the exits together, and leave together, that way we all stay safe.” Michael had spoken so clearly and confidently towards Jeff, I think he shocked all of us. Maybe he wasn’t the killer, or he wanted to get us all in the hallway and shoot us. Hm…..
“Ok, before we go lets go over what we already know.” Tucker stood at the chalkboard behind Orbison and wrote out –
1.Dead Teacher
2. Deserted school
3. Shooter amongst us- 1 out of 6 is killer
4. No cell service
5. Main entrance locked
“This is so stupid.” Max shrugged, plopping down into a desk at the front.
“Shut up!” I uttered. “I mean we don’t have a plan and it’s good to go over what has happened.” I didn’t want to stick up for Tucker but we had nothing else at the moment.
“Thanks Babe.” Tucker winked. I could feel my cheeks burning red in front of everyone at his comment. They didn’t seem to put much behind it though, seeing as we had a murdered teacher next to us.
Tucker drew a line on the board separating his list into two columns.
“Ok, so I’ll write up plans and we’ll pick from the best. If it’s fucked, we’ll do another one. K? So what do we have?” He started to write, ‘split up’ go as group’ … “Um..anything else?” Tucker looked around.
“Someone should stay in the class room.” Michael said.
“What? Why?” Jeff questioned suspiciously at Michael.
“In case he isn’t dead and starts waking up, he’ll need help. Or if cell service comes back I don’t know I was just throwing an idea out. We don’t have to use it.” Michael started getting defensive towards Jeff.
“He just wants to stay behind so he can come after us in a surprise attack.” Max pointed excitedly, trying to win some approval from Jeff.
“Yeah, you’re right Max. Ok, Tucker this is stupid, lets all just go and check for open doors for a phone and check the doors to get the fuck out of here.” Jeff was obviously sick of the situation and decided to take control of the group. “Everybody! Grab yer shit, and lets get the fuck on with this!” Jeff barked.
We decided to leave the door open, in case it locked on it’s own for some reason after it got shut. We were already in the last room of the school so we started up hall, only able to go in one direction for a while.
“Locked.” Max muttered as we passed the first classroom. We all took turns jiggling handles and watching the group. I had never been so nervous and freaked out in my life. The lights were on “save mode” so about half the lights were on in the hallways. We approached the gymnasium and decided to go in. I found the lightswitch and flipped them all on. It was cool, I had never done that before. All the lights started “buzzing” and flickering on.
“Ahhhhhh! Oh my God!” Courtney screamed pointing at the far corner of the gym. There was a body laying there, we couldn’t tell who it was but it was a male just by the build and short hair. There was a pool of blood around him.
