******8 years later*******
There was only one window that let light in, it had 3 inch bars covering the front of it. The walls had paint peeling, and dirt stains all over it. The bathroom next door needed serious improvement the sink was rusty and half broken the toilet had no lid and the bathtub housed of family of spiders. I sat on my mattress with my knees pressed to my chest and my head setting on them starring off into the distance with pieces of my blond hair dangling I front of my face. I couldn't stand living this way any longer.
"Joseph" I whispered, trying to see if he was awake.
"....ugh.... Ya?" He mumbled back,
"Are you awake?"
"No I'm sleep talking...... Yes I'm awake what do you need?" He asked while sitting up, he look me in the eye but mine darted to the corner of the room where Renee lay sleeping. Her short bob cut blonde hair covered her face, she was sprawled out and had her hands tucked up against her chest. She wore a dirty pink shirt and what used to be white shorts. I took in a deep breath and turned to him blurting out the question before losing all my confidence,
"Why are we sitting around here doing nothing?"
He stiffened and stared at me his soft brown eyes become cold and I could see the frustration stirring. His brown hair was a mess and his black shirt was torn, his shorts are covered in a layer of dirt. Still he sat tall glaring down at me.
"We aren't doing nothing Nicole we are surviving day by day. Escaping won't help us. It will get us killed."
"It could! If you would just listen to my plan you would understand what how escaping would work and how the five of us could get out safely." I cried,
"No Nicole! Olivia tried and Olivia failed I'm not going to lose another person important to me! I won't lose you or the others!" Joseph yelled,
I froze before looking around the room to see if anyone woke from our argument. Once I was sure that everyone was still sleeping, I turned back to Joseph but before I could say anything he cut me off and continued.
"We are surviving just fine here, life isn't easy but we're alive and that is what matters."
"We are alive, but we're not really living either..." I mumbled low enough so that Joseph couldn't here me. I laid down and curled in a ball before falling asleep.

"Okay Carson what's happened while I have been gone?" Peter asked,
Peter was tall muscular man with ginger hair and sinister brown eyes. A face hardly unforgettable, he was the one in charge of everything always giving orders. Carson was a short brunette that is an air head most of the time. He is the second in command whenever Peter is out Carson is in charge.
"Oh well Nic.."
"Subject four." Peter interrupted,
"Oh right, subject four is once again trying to convince Jose... I mean subject three into leaving but he said no. After that all subjects went to sleep; that was 6 hours ago, nothing new." Carson frowned,
Peter pushed Carson's seat over and took a sat next to him starring at the computers which showed the many different areas of the basement. Each child was laying on his or her mattress sleeping. Peter darted his eyes to the clock, 6:48am.
"Go give the subjects their food." Peter commanded,

I heard the door slam open, and I jerked up to see what was going on. I could feel my pulse begin to slow as Carson descended down the stairs carrying food. He handed each of us a banana and cup of water before turning around and heading to the top of the stairs. Each step the wood creaked and shook like at any second it would snap in two. At the top he proceeded to type in the code; I was to far away to see what numbers were being punched in. Not to long after I heard the click of the door unlocking and Carson vanished behind the metal door.
"The code ended with 99." Renee announced her green eyes glancing into mine, then to Joseph's, I followed her gaze towards him. He looked less than pleased to hear Renee's words.
"Wait I'm confused so are we leaving this place?" Kneil asked,
Kneil was short with blonde curly hair and ocean blue eyes. He wore red long sleeved shirt and shorts that used to be pants, but were cut in half.
"No." Joseph said, his words were harsh and cold.
"Please Joseph, Renee and I came up with the perfect plan and how to get out sa..."
"I said no!" Joseph interrupted
"Well who put you in charge? You not even the oldest! Renee is, she is 14. Your only 12." Taylor growled,
He was medium height had dirty blonde hair that is short and spiked everywhere. He wore brown baggy pants and a blue jacket. His brown eyes gazing straight at Joseph. We all sat quietly, everyone staring at Joseph whose face was redder than a tomato. You could almost see the steam exploding from his ears. I broke the silence,
"Okay so here's the plan. After Carson comes down and gives us dinner we wait for about an hour before going up and typing the code. That time is when there are less or no foot steps being heard from above. Then we quietly climb the stairs and find our way out by looking for the door. Once out we run and never look back."
"What about the code we only know the last two numbers?" Taylor asked,
"Yes, that will be the only hard part we have. I counted all the digits he pushes and I got a total count of eight. So Renee you seem to be able to do it can you give it a try, your the one who is closest to the key pad."
"Yes I'll do it." Renee smiled,
I looked towards Joseph; he just stared down at the ground nibbling on the banana. We all finished eating and sat in silence for what felt like days, but was really only minutes.
"So where are we going to go after this?" Kneil asked,
"Well I don't know, our parents probably forgot about us, so we cant go home. I guess we walk till we find a new place to live." Renee shrugged,
"Well once I heard Carson and Peter talking about this place called Blue Lagoon. It's an abandoned area full of surprises we can go and live there." I suggested,
From the very limited list of where to go once we escaped everyone agreed on the idea of finding Blue Lagoon. For hours we talked about ideas of what could happen once we got out and found blue lagoon we all laughed and giggled. The rooms atmosphere changed it went from dark and dreary to bright and happy. Finally I felt safe and was ready to get out of this small confined room. The sun had just finished setting; I heard the door unlock and Carson brought down a cup of milk and small plate of chicken for each of us. Joseph started eating right as the food was placed in front of him. The rest of us watched closely as Carson walked up the stairs. I squinted to see the numbers he was pushing in. 1 ***1*99 was all I could make out of the code. The rest was up to Renee. Once the door had slammed shut all eyes turned to Renee.
"One....zero..two, eight..............."
"One," I smiled,
"right.... One, zero, two, eight, one... nine, nine, nine," Renee smiled.
Then we waited till we heard almost no footsteps. Hands shaking, heart beating, I followed everyone to the stairs. Renee was the first one making sure to be extra careful to not make a sound as we climbed the stairs. I was the last and I looked back at Joseph whose face was soft and sad instead of angry. I reached my hand out to him silently begging him to come with. I knew he would not want to stay here alone, he could get killed for staying and not going with us. I think he knew it too, because instead of taking my hand he rushed up and hugged me. The embrace was quick but I didn't mind because I was relieved he was coming with us. We made it to the top right as the light went green and the door opened.
