Radimus put out a call to Legends Guild Members, asking for volunteers to explore the Island, just as another adventurer had done down in the Kharazi Jungle. This time, given how remote the location was and the unknown factors, the Guilds agreed they wanted to send teams of experienced adventurers out. Dozens of adventurers of all calibers and ages showed up to listen to what the Grand Vizier had for us.
Since everyone going would be members of the Legends Guild, rather than up and coming types, he knew everyone he gathered could handle it. But this time, he would offer no rewards for those who went and returned. No dusty lamps, no chests filled with treasure, no special discounts from the various Guild stores. This time, those who went would get their names written into the journals of history as explorers in their own right from Samuel Scoundrel to Explorer Jack. Plus, as the first real explorers to arrive on the isle, we would be the first to discover many new wonders, and possibly, resources to exploit.
After the speech, some in the crowd simply walked off, either not the type of 'quest' they had in mind, or no stomach for another step into the unknown. Others were already bogged down in their own affairs or adventures and did not have the time to take on an exploration of his scale. One among the crowd asked if this meant we would be among the first humans to set foot on the Isle.
Radimus had to correct or clarify a few points:- The Isle is inhabited. There are a few humans, but no one from outside of the Isle knows what all lurks there.
- The only 'exploration' done to the Isle has been by a few ships that survived sailing around it and any encounters to the locals in the port of the southern tip of the Isle. No maps of detail have been created, and little is known of the interior.
- Other explorer types may be en route, but they may be independents. The Guilds, in association with a few archaeological and scholarly groups, wanted to pool their resources behind a single formal expedition.
In the end, nearly twenty, including myself, were left to take up the call.
Radimus gave us each a journal to take. He mentioned that it was based off some 'ancient magic journal writing' spell that would record the thoughts and sights of whomever held the book. The spell upon the books was not perfected by the Wizard's Tower, but he did demonstrate the usefulness of the journal when he took his summons letter, speech notes, and the crudest drawing taken of the isle, and added them to a page of a journal, and magically, the different entries were now written exactly onto the first few pages of the journal. Seemed the journal and pages was also waterproof, 'fire resistant', would magically spawn any number of pages the writer needed to add, and a number of security features that would make the journal survive anything that would likely kill a person ... a not so comforting thought over time ...
