Beep! Beep! Beep! It was the sound of the alarm in the air. Archie automatically looked down and saw a dog tag with a silver button hanging from his neck.
So it wasn't a dream. It made no sense but he told Hope he had to go.
"But you promised to come to the church. We were going to light a candle for my Mom and Dad," whined the 12-year old orphan.
"Look, I know I promised you O would come with you, but it's an emergency. I need to go. Can't you go ask Will to go?" begged Archie.
Hope shook her head. "Father Jones kicked Will out because he started screaming during the Thanksgiving Mass." Hope spoke the words calmly as if she never noticed her friend was a freak.
Archie looked at Hope. "Why was he screaming?"
She sighed. "He told me not to tell anyone, but Father Jones said to be thankful for everything we have. Will has nothing to be thankful for. His parents work day and night, his brother is about to die in Texas, and the only friends he has is us. I don't blame home," admitted the girl.
BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! Archie had to go. Piff and Daisy needed him, but so did Hope.
"I'm sorry Hope." Every bitter word that Archie spoke hurt him more than it hurt Hope. He turned and bolted down the street, to his house, and away from Hope.
Archie could hear her screams and cries a mile away.
