*Picture above is Nikki Keys, the main character, but she hides her looks under her hoodie.*

Nikki's P.O.V.

Beep, beep, beep! Beep, beep, beep-

I slammed the button on the alarm clock, groaning. Today was the first day of school. Man, what I would give for another day of summer break, I thought. I slowly dragged my body from the bed, and fumbled for my jeans and husky shirt I had put on my closet hanger. I slipped on the clothes and walked into the bathroom, brushing my teeth and taking a quick shower, when a loud voice nearly scared me out of my skin.

"Nikki! Get your butt down here!"

I rolled my eyes as I blow dried my hair. "Yes, Mom!"

After about five minutes, I made my way downstairs, and grinned at the sight of waffles. Mom stood by the kitchen sink, humming a tune I vaguely found familiar.

"Eat up, kiddo," she said without turning around.

Without wasting another second, I flew to the plate and dug in, closing my eyes in pure bliss. Mom always made the best waffles in town. I would gladly eat them for the rest of my life.
After I finished devouring the waffles, I slung on my backup, and bid Mom goodbye. I made sure to not accidentally slam the door, or else she would be mad at me. Since the bus never stopped by our house, I had to walk. Not that I minded, of course. Our house was near a beautiful forest, which had lots of animals that were quite friendly, except the predators. All they wanted to do was eat me!

I made good time as I arrived at school about 4 minutes later. Normally, it would take 5-7 minutes. Suddenly, somebody hugged me from behind, and I let out a squeal of surprise. "Hey!"

"Ohmigosh, Nikki, it's me, VALERIA!"

I whipped around to see Valeria, my best friend. "Valeria! I'm so glad that you're still going here!"

She laughed and rolled her eyes. "Well, I told you I was staying," she said. "Oh, and you still wear that shirt?"

"Oh, yeah... Well, whatever. I love this shirt. Let's go inside!"

I pulled her inside the school, and remembered my home room. "Room 130... Mrs. Gomez..."

I scanned the halls, and tugged on Valeria's shirt. "Where's Mrs. Gomez's room again?"

She sighed and led me upstairs, weaving in and out between the mass of bodies. We stopped at an open door with a silver plaque that proudly proclaimed, Room 130, Mrs. Gomez. She didn't hesitate to step inside, this time dragging me in. Luckily, everybody was busy talking and bustling around, and nobody noticed us except Mrs. Gomez.

"Ah, welcome! You girls are..?" She smiled, and I could tell she would be one of the nice teachers.

"I'm Valeria, and this is Nikki," Valeria said before I could reply. "Nice to meet you, Mrs. Gomez! Do we have assigned seats, or do we pick where we sit?"

"For the beginning of the year, you get to choose where you sit, but if you guys get out of hand, I will assign you seats. Also, hoodies are not allowed, but since we have good reports with you, and you've always worn them, we'll turn a blind eye to it," she said in a firm, but friendly voice. "Anyways, I better get this class under control. Class! Class!"

Valeria and I hurried to two empty seats so we could sit next to each other. I managed to step over a backpack before I tripped over it, but Valeria wasn't so lucky as she stumbled over a fat backpack. "Move your backpack!" she hissed to the backpack's owner as we sat down and slipped off our backpacks.

"Class," Mrs. Gomez boomed. "I am Mrs. Gomez, as most of you already know. Today you do not have assigned seats, but I assure you, if you get out of hand, I will assign seats. Now, since you guys are almost in college, I assume th-"

The intercom pinged once. "Attention teachers and students. There is an assembly down in the gym. Follow your teacher quietly there. Thank you." It pinged once again to signal it was finished.

"Oh, well, looks like it's already time for the assembly," Mrs. Gomez muttered. Then, in a louder voice, she said, "Students, please organize yourselves into a straight line. Follow me, and please be quiet."

With that, we got into a line. It was definitely not straight (more like a blob of people), but she seemed satisfied as she motioned for us to follow her as she walked out the door. I was behind Valeria, so I could see her eye some guys.

"Hey, already looking for a boyfriend?" I nudge her playfully, startling her.

"N-no! A girl can look, can't she?" she mumbled to herself, shooting a glare at me before hurrying off after the line.

We arrived at the gym, and Mrs. Gomez instructed us on where to sit: the bleachers. Soon, I was sitting next to Valeria, with her whispering about how "hot" some guys are.

"..ooh, and he's cute... Wait, look at that guy! Man, if I-"

"Valeria! Shut up!" I hissed as a man walked onto a platform set up in the middle of the gym. He cleared his throat and narrowed his eyes at some 12th graders goofing around.

"Welcome, students, to Rosewood High School. We are in the top 50 high schools, so please be thankful that you got into this school. I expect the best of you, so if I see too much goofing off-" He shot a look at the same 12th graders. "-you will be expelled from this school. I am Mr. Williams. Now, let's go over the rules."

Mr. William blabbered about some rules. Being the quiet, good nerd that I was, I listened. Meanwhile, Valeria, the party girl, kept on looking at boys and tugging on my sleeve to whisper about them. Finally, I got so tired, that I hissed, "Can you stop whispering about them?"

Thankfully, she stopped, but kept on eyeing them. I sighed. Well, this is going to be a long assembly.
