There were three things in her envelope: a life story that she was meant to memorize just in case anyone ever asked questions, her identification card and a sheet of paper with a name and an address printed neatly across the page.
Eleanor Pierce; One57, New York, NY 10019
She did not know whether she should go to her or stay put. Perhaps Eleanor would be the one to come to her or perhaps not.
Scarlett pulled the scrunchy out of her hair and let it fall loose as to cover the mark on her neck. If people saw it, they would begin to ask questions she could not provide answers to. It had been a while since she had let her hair fall and it was significantly longer than she remembered. She brushed her fingers through the tangled mess several times before declaring it decent.
Her hair fell in loose waves just above her breasts framing every inch of her sharp features and brought out the perfect shade of blue in her eyes.
It did not matter if Eleanor would come to her, she would use her newfound freedom to explore the concrete jungle that laid at her feet and she would go to her first.
Scarlett made her way out of the stone cold apartment not caring to pay any attention to its luxurious decor. She could live on the side of the street and be just as happy as she was now.
She rode the elevator down 75 floors in utter silence and immediately made her way out of the small box. She had always disliked small enclosed spaces.
She pulled her hood over her head before exiting the tall building. She was immediately overwhelmed by the magnitude of people surrounding her in every direction she turned. There were people brushing against her shoulder every two seconds. Some people sped through the crowd, in a hurry to get somewhere while others walked as if they had all the time in the world.
A majority of the crowd was human, she could tell. They moved and held themselves differently than the vampires and they seemed to be the ones rushing everywhere.
The sun was significantly lower in the sky since she had first opened her eyes causing a small panic within her. The city was big, she had underestimated the vastness and now she would be walking in circles all night unsure of her own whereabouts.
Perhaps she should have waited for her mentor.
A cool breeze brushed passed her, knocking her hood back and exposing her face. Just as she reached to pull it back on, she heard a faint voice call her name.
"Scarlett?"
Scarlett stood absolutely still, unsure of if she should move or keep moving.
She was surrounded by thousands of people, perhaps someone was trying to speak to another Scarlett.
She began to walk again only to be stopped by the same voice.
"Scarlett, wait?"
She has just received her new identity, how was it possible that someone else already knew it? She stood still, which seemed to anger many people walking by her and waited for the person to approach her.
Scarlett wrapped her arms around herself in a vain attempt to bring some warmth to her shivering body. She held on tightly but her blood felt cold as it rushed through her vanes.
If this person that knew her name did not end her then surely someone that found her suspicious would. She had already received several looks from people walking by, humans, it would only be a matter of seconds before she caught the attention of a vampire.
She reached for her blade but came up empty handed. Scarlett had been foolish enough to leave the apartment without a weapon or any form of protection for that matter, it seemed only suitable that she should die for her stupidity. This was no longer a game, this was the real world and she could not afford to make any mistakes.
"Scarlett." She noticed a woman standing in front of her. She had long dark hair that blew swiftly in the wind and though this woman was shorter than Scarlett, Scarlett felt petite next to her.
"Yes?" She answered the woman.
"Are you deliberately trying to get yourself killed?" Her voice held cold and demanding.
"No." Was all Scarlett managed to get out of her mouth.
"Let's go." She grabbed Scarlett by the arm and dragged her in the opposite direction. In any other situation, Scarlett would have fought this woman and questioned who she was and what right she had but one look at her dark brown eyes kept her mouth shut.
The win began to pick up once again, brushing the woman's hair aside and exposing her markings. They were lighter than her own but they were there and Scarlett no longer felt as frightened. The woman was a hunter just like herself.
The woman was also her mentor.
The woman was Eleanor.
The woman was pissed at her.
Somehow, when Scarlett pictured Eleanor, she had pictured someone warm, someone motherly, that was far from what she got. She needed a friend in the outside world, someone to guide her when she needed it and she really didn't want that person to be a cold hearted bitch. She had grown up surrounded by girls like her and all she wished for was someone to get along with. Was that too much to ask for?
Perhaps she could win her over though she did not know how. She had clearly already caused a bad impression on her and the first impression of a person was always the most important one, even in a world ruled by vampires.
All there was left to wish was that this would be the only time she would have to meet with Eleanor and then they could both pretend they did not exist to each other. The city was big enough that it was almost certain they wouldn't bump it each other again, but somehow she knew that was not an option.
They reached the familiar building and headed inside.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
