Harper's Pov
I slowly walked towards the gym after lunch. Ugh I really hate gym, I wish I didn't have to take it. I saw the new girl walk into the gym with Aiden, Logan, and Mason. She's only been here for a few hours and she's already made more friends than I have in 3 years. It's odd though, I never pictured her hanging out with those kind of people. Don't get me wrong I don't think they're losers or anything, its just I picture her in Sylvia's crowd, with the pretty popular girls. I guess you really can't judge a book by it's cover. I walked into the gym and saw the new girl getting a uniform from the gym teacher, our gym uniform is just a pair of blue shorts and a grey shirt with our school name on it. I walked into the girls locker room and started getting changed. I chose a locker that was all the way in the back where the other girls don't go. I was putting on my sneakers when I spotted the new girl at the end of the row of lockers putting her stuff in the last locker and putting her hair in a ponytail then walking away. Why did she pick a locker all the way back here? I walked out of the locker room and saw her talking to Aiden and Logan who I admit look pretty handsome without their glasses on. I'm still wearing mine unfortunately I can't see without them. Next thing I knew a basketball hit me on the side of my head knocking me down. Of course nobody noticed because I still heard everyone going on with what they were doing. The hit knocked my glasses off so of course I'm crawling on the floor like Velma from Scooby-Doo hopelessly looking for them.
"Hey are you ok? You got hit pretty hard by that basketball" I stopped moving and looked up at the blurry image that was near me. next thing I knew whoever she was gently grabbed my arm and hoisted me up to my feet.
"Um I'm sorry but w-who are you I can't see without my glasses" I said as I placed my hand on her shoulder to keep me from falling, I was kind of light headed from the hit.
"O right sorry, here you go" she said and then placed something on my face and her image came to view. Standing in front of me was the new girl, I stared at her in awe, she was even more prettier when she's standing in front of you.
"Are you sure you don't need to go to the nurse?" oh my god she's talking to me. I tried to reply to her but nothing came out. O great she's the first person to ever talk to you Harper and you are completely blowing it.
"Hey maybe she does need to go to the nurse" I realized that remark didn't come from her and I took a glance behind her to see Aiden and Logan, who I didn't know were there the whole time.
"Um..I-I can t-take myself thanks" I said stuttering as I backed up and then bolted towards the exit. I made it up the hallway before I got really dizzy so I stopped and leaned against a locker. Nice going Harper, they actually spoke to you and you totally blew it. They probably think I'm a weirdo now. I sighed, why am I such a loser.
"I don't think it's safe for you to be running in the hallways.." I suddenly looked up and saw the new girl standing in front of me once again. When did she even get there, I didn't even hear her walk up. "come on, I'll help you get to the nurse but you have to help me find it because I have no idea where it is". She said as she extended her hand out for me to grab. I hesitated at first but then grabbed her hand, she pulled me up and put my arm around her shoulders to give me support. Why is she helping me?
"You don't have to do this, it's better if you stay in class it's your first day" I said surprisingly without stuttering. "I asked the the teacher if I could take you, so its ok. Plus you barely made it down the hallway before I saw you collapse, I think it's safer if I help you to the nurse"
"How did you ask you don't even know my name.." I said curiously.
"Yes I do Harper" Wait what how did she know my name, nobody knows me
"how do you kno-"
"From English class, when Mr. Smith called your name to play the nurse, someone said "who's that" well when you got hit by the basketball nobody noticed except me because your glasses skidded across the floor and hit my shoe, I asked Aiden who you were before I walked over to you, he said you are in his classes but he doesn't know your name, so I kind of put two and two together. But I'm right, right? Your names Harper?" I was taken back a bit, she's very observant.
"Y-yea you're right"
"Well Harper I'm Desiree, nice to meet you" she gave me a warm smile. We continued down the hallway and I gave her directions to the nurses office. After she made sure I was ok she got up to leave, "See you in class tomorrow Harper" she said before giving me a small wave and walking out of the nurses office. Did I just make a friend?
2 hr's later
I walked through the door with an ice pack on my headas my father looked at me from where he sat on the living room couch watching TV. "O no not again, sweetie did you get hit by another ball in gym class?" My mother asked when she walked out of the kitchen and saw me standing there still in my gym uniform with an ice pack on my head.
"Yes and I spent the rest of the day in the nurses office, luckily she let me go 10 minutes before the bell rang or else I wouldn't have gotten my other clothes out my gym locker". I said as I sighed and sat next to my dad.
"I have to make you a doctors appointment, I'm pretty sure its not good to begetting hit in the head by basketballs everyday". My mom said as she went into the kitchen to call the doctor.
"So besides getting attacked by another wild flying basketball, how was your second day of school"My dad said turning to look at me and examining the old bruise above my eyebrow that I got the day before.
"It was a lot like yesterday dad, well except there's a new girl at school"
"New girl?"
"Yea she's from America, she moved all the way from New York"
"Must suck to move so far and be a new girl during your senior year?"My dad said sounding sympathetic for her.
"Who moved here from New York?" my mom said as she came into the living room.
"A new girl, her names Desiree"
"That's a nice name" My mother said as she joined us on the couch.
"Yea she's nice" I said, my parents suddenly turned their heads to me and looked at me surprised. "What..?" I said confused
"You said she's nice, did you spoke to her?" My mother said.
"Well she spoke to me actually..."
"You made a friend Harper!"
"I don't know mom, I mean she only spoke to me because she was the only one who helped me when I got hit with the ball"
"She helped you? Really?"
"Yea dad she walked me to the nurse so I wouldn't passout in the hallway, because I tried to go on my own but I couldn't make it, but she found me and helped me there. I don't know why you guys are getting so worked up about this I mean she's probably never going to speak to me again"
"Harper, nobody ever helps you when you get hurt in gym but she did. I think you should give the girl a little more credit" my mother said.
"Remember she's new, she's not like everyone else I'm guessing. If she talks to you again try to give her a chance, who knows maybe this can be a good thing Harper" my dad said as my mom nodded in agreement. As we sat there watching a movie together I couldn't help but think about what happened today. For a few minutes I wasn't invisible to someone, she spoke to me, she helped me, and overall she wasn't mean to me whatsoever. Maybe we could be friends...but was I ready for a friend? I'm so use to being alone and I don't mind it, I never had a friend and I don't feel like I need one, but the real question was did I want one?
