Let me know if you like this chapter. I'm willing to do it over if necessary. Also note that since Jourdain is pregnant, she is liable to do things she may not ordinarily do (on account of the pregnancy hormones).

Enjoy :)

Jourdain walked out of the doctor’s office with the weight of the world on her shoulders. She knew Karma liked to bite people on the ass from time to time, but now this bitch was taking it to the next level. Twenty something years of being a good person, and the one time she decides to have a good girl gone bad moment she ends up fucked three ways from Sunday. She winced at her choice of words---well, choice of thoughts. Jourdain hastily wiped away the tears that tickled her cheeks.

She had no one to blame but herself, really. She’d been missing excitement in her life, and found it in Matteo. A good person, a better woman, would have ignored Matteo’s advances.

But the man was so goddamn aggressive and persuasive that she never stood a chance. Damn his bad boy Italian charm.

A good person, a better woman, would have broken off her engagement when she realized that Matteo wasn’t going anywhere. Matteo was right. She was lying to herself that morning when she chose Max over him. But in that moment, she couldn’t see a future with him, a future she so desperately wanted.

Jourdain laughed bitterly. Well, she got what she wanted, a child---a family; only she had no husband, and currently, until her Bar exam results came in, no job. What the hell was she going to tell her parents? Especially her mother. They would be so disappointed her; their golden child who’d done everything right, everything by the books was soon to be single, pregnant and temporarily jobless.

Her future had never looked so bleak. And for the first time in her life, she felt truly scared.

Jourdain was interrupted from her self-deprecating thoughts by the sound of her phone ringing. She didn’t recognize the number, but answered anyway.

“Hello?” She mumbled miserably.

“Hello, is this Jourdain Wright?” A bubbly voice inquired.

I bet this bitch didn’t cheat on her fiancé with a man who doesn’t want a family, Jourdain thought bitterly. “Yes,” she answered with a biting tone.

“Hi, Jourdain. I’m calling from the Pitts, Barnes and Cooper Law offices. We’ve received your application and resume and after serious consideration we’d like to gladly welcome you to the family.”

Jourdain stopped walking. Several people behind her cursed her out for her abrupt stop, giving her dirty looks as they walked around her, but she ignored them. “You—what?”

The woman chuckled lightly. “Yes, I know it’s a bit sudden, but we are willing to offer you a clerk job until we receive your Bar results in November. Your application and internship history was just too great to pass up. Once we receive your results, which I’m sure you passed, we will gladly promote you to an attorney at the firm. My name is Andrea Pitts by the way.”

Several thoughts ran through Jourdain’s mind at once. But mainly, she was amazed. She stood with her mouth gaping open as she thought of words to say. “I—I don’t know what to say…”
