"Where could he be?" I asked myself, scratching my head. This isn't right. Chad and I were supposed to meet at the town library to work on something for the Homecoming dance. He was forced to be part of the graphic design team to make up for some of his grades. But he never showed up, and he wasn't picking up his phone.

I grunted. "That's it," I said, scrolling over my contacts. "I'm calling his parents."

The phone rang for a couple of seconds before someone picked up. "Hello, Carrie," Mrs. Wright said, slowly. "Is something alright? You rarely call us."

"Yes, I'm afraid there is a bit of a problem," I said tentatively. Chad's parents tended to overreact, especially when it came to him. He was their youngest child, and all of his older siblings had gone to college out of town. "Chad and I were supposed to meet at the town library, but he didn't show up. Do you have any idea where could he be?"

Mrs. Wright thought about it for a couple of seconds before answering. "Well, he did mention something about a Trevor. Do you know him?" She asked.

"Yes, he's the new kid at school," I answered. "But they just met. Do you think he went over to his house?"

"Possibly," She replied. "But I'm not entirely sure."

I sighed. "Thanks anyway, Mrs. Wright. I'll go look for him now."

"You too, Carrie," She said. "Take care."

I ended the call, and sighed again. Jesus. Chad had barely known Trevor for a whole day, and he's already going over to his house? What could they be doing?

Getting on my bike, I realized something. I didn't know where Trevor's house was. This meant that I had to call someone to find out. Thankfully, I knew just the person.

I sent a quick text to Maia Carter, the school gossip. She knows the skinny on everyone. A few seconds later, I had Trevor's address. I got on my bike, and began to pedal.

--

Finally! Finding Trevor's house wasn't easy, but it sure was tiring. The town library was on the other side of town, and I didn't have the best stamina in town. Thankfully his street was lit up with a ton of street lamps.

I set my bike on the sidewalk, and grabbed my bag. I looked up at his house, and my breath was taken away momentarily. I had never seen anything look so ordinary.

It was like looking at a cartoon house. It had two stories, and two windows on each floor. The chimney was bright red, and made out of bricks. The white wooden door was set right in the middle of the house, and in front of a gravel pathway. The lawn wasn't perfectly trimmed, which made it stand out more.

I took a deep breath before going to the front door. Then, I knocked once.

Silence.

I knocked again, with more force.

Still silence.

Strange. Where could Trevor's parents be? I looked at the driveway, and found nothing. Maybe they went out? But where could Chad be, if Trevor and his parent's weren't here?

I turned around to leave, but suddenly I heard someone cry out. I head a few curse words, then a loud thud. What the heck? Is there a prowler out here? I grabbed my mace from my bag, and got ready to use it. "Who's there?" I asked out loud. "Show yourself."
