What the hell was I supposed to tell her? I knew that I could be honest with her since we were pretty close friends, but this was a pretty serious manner. A kid was missing. A kid I was in charge of.
There was a knock at the door.
"Coming!" I shouted.
I made my way over to the door and quickly unlocked and pulled the handle.
The door swung open.
"What the fuck is happening?!" Kai said as she stormed in.
I tried to speak but she kept interrupting; "I was just sitting on my bed about to continue on to the next episode of Gilmore Girls and then you called. I'm usually always willing to help, but I was in the middle of binge-watching the series. I'M ALREADY SO INVESTED."
"Kai, stop. This is serious." I responded.
I could see her looking down at my hands.
"Why is there blood covering your hands?" She questioned.
"That's the thing," I said. "Jaxon is missing."
An alarmed look graced her face.
"I was sitting on the couch minding my own and Mackenzie walked down from the stairs covered in blood asking where her father was. I noticed there was a trail of blood coming from behind her," I said.
"Uhhh where is Mackenzie now?" Kai asked.
"She's over there on her..." I looked over to where was had been.
"SHE WAS OVER IN HER BEAN BAG CHAIR!" I said. "FUCK!"
Kai and I both looked around the room in search of her.
"Holy shit. Holy shit, this is terrible," I exclaimed. "She was acting so strange, so I have no idea what the hell she could be up to."
"Maybe she's upstairs?" Kai suggested.
I darted towards the stairs and Kai followed suit.
Splitting up, Kai and I busted threw all of the doors and entered each of the rooms.
First, I opened the first door I saw. Mackenzie's room. Pink décor covered the walls and to no surprise there was toys covering every square inch of the floor.
Then I heard, "MACKENZIE?!"
I turned around and rushed out of Mackenzie's obviously abandoned bedroom.
"What is it?" I asked as entered Jaxon's room, which was next door.
As I entered I could see the side profile of Kai's face. Her expression was priceless, as if she saw a ghost.
"Daddy will be back soon," a squeaky voice sounded.
There stood Mackenzie hovering over Jaxon's twin sized bed. She had placed a stuffed bear in his bed. Covered it up and attempted to console it.
"Mackenzie," I said. "Are you okay?"
Mackenzie didn't take notice. She continued to spew comforting message in a slightly eerie tone.
Kai stepped towards the bed, where Mackenzie stood.
"Kai, that probably isn't such a good..." I said.
Mackenzie turned in the direction of Kai as she was approaching her.
A smile began to stretch across her face. "I'm okay," Mackenzie whispered. "I'm just sad."
"Would you want a hug?" Kai asked.
Kai kneeled down and reached out her arms. Mackenzie stuck out her arms in the same fashion.
As they got closer Mackenzie's arms slowly raised. Mackenzie then grabbed ahold of Kai's head and slammed her against the wall that was beside them.
Kai didn't make a sound, gradually her face slid down the wall and hit the floor.
I could not believe what I saw.
As Kai laid on the floor, motionless, a puddle of crimson blood started to form around her skull.
