I sat quietly in the back of their small blue car, looking out of the window. Percy had been very quiet since we arrived, and Annabeth was driving. It really feels weird calling them that. They only seemed about three or four years older than me, so calling them mom and dad was out of the question. Percy attempted to start a conversation with me. "So, Rebecca, what's your favorite color?"
"Black. But I like red too. And blue is nice, it just doesn't suit me very well," I said quietly.
Percy smiled a bit at me when I mentioned liking blue. "Blue looks good on anybody."
"Except me. I wind up looking like cotton candy or a blue raspberry lollipop."
We sat in silence for a while. My thumb twitched nervously and I bounced my leg up and down rapidly, not making a sound. I bit my lip and twiddled my fingers until I reached into my suitcase on the seat next to me and pulled out a piece of gum. I chewed it, and as soon as it was pliable and soft, I grabbed another piece and shoved it in my mouth. I did that until I had a massive wad of four pieces of gum in my mouth, successfully satisfying my ADHD, and my leg stopped and my hands were still. I had a massive 20-pound bag of gum hidden in my suitcase. I zipped it closed quietly and leaned back against the black interior of the car.
"Do you mind if I listen to my iPod?" I asked them timidly.
"No, not at all. You're family now, you don't have to ask," Annabeth replied kindly.
"Thank you," I said softly. I put in my earbuds and listened to alternative music until I felt the car start to slow down. Then I paused my music, took out my earbuds, and made sure I had everything before they even stopped the car. I sat back, my eyes half closed as they pulled into their driveway.
"We're here!" Annabeth declared. She stepped out of the car and I opened the door to get a good look at the house for the first time.
It was a charming white house with black shutters and roof, bushes out in front and a few steps up to the front door. It was small and two stories plus an attic. My sunglasses almost fell off. "Wow. It so- so-" I fought to find the words to describe it.
"Run down? Small? In need of repairs?" Percy said anxiously, like he was worried that's what I saw.
"No, not at all. I'd be happy to help renovate or work on it if you'd like. It has loads of potential. It just needs a little TLC and it'll be just like new. It's utterly charming." I hauled my bag out of the car and slipped the straps of my backpack over my shoulder. "I'm guessing we aren't in Ohio anymore."
Percy shook his head. "No, you're in Burgess, Pennsylvania. Close enough to New York, but not too close either."
"I've always wanted to go to the Empire State Building. Maybe ask for the 600th floor, like in my favorite books." I sighed. "But I've been moving across the states. Started out in Los Angeles a few years back. Now I'm here." I started chewing my gum vigorously, but without making a sound. I pushed my sunglasses up my nose with my pointer finger. "So, do you have any other kids? Foster or otherwise?" I asked, anxious to change the topic.
Annabeth beamed. "Yes, one son and one daughter. You'll love them."
"I hope so," I said. I really wanted to make these people like me, but I didn't know why. My hand started to reach for my necklace, but I stopped myself. There was no need to scare off the only foster parents I had ever liked by making the air smell like dead people. I stared up at the house and suddenly it seemed foreboding, intimidating. "I don't think the house likes me," I whispered.
"What was that?" Percy asked. Not in a nasty way, just genuinely curious.
"No, it's nothing. Probably just my ADHD or something."
"You have ADHD?"
"Yeah. That's why the gum. It keeps me still, it keeps me calm," I muttered the last bit in a rhyming manner. I sometimes think I'm going crazy. I whirled suddenly. It felt like someone was...
Watching me.
There. Across the street. Three old ladies rocking on the porch, knitting a huge sweater. I tugged on Percy's sleeve. "Um, Mr. Jackson?"
"Yes, Rebecca?"
"Do you see the old ladies too? The ones knitting?"
He looked at them and his face lost all it's color. "Annabeth."
Annabeth's head snapped around to face us. "What?"
"The three fates!" He hissed.
"Oh my gods," she whispered. "Rebecca, get inside. Get inside the house now."
Her tone frightened me. I nodded and scurried up to the front door, leaving my suitcase on the front lawn. I glanced back over my shoulder just in time to lock eyes with the middle lady just as she pulled out these massive shears and cut the yarn for the sweater. I gasped and I swore I smelled corpses. I felt like a small part of myself had been pulled away. I covered it up and grabbed my suitcase. "Um, Mr. Jackson, Mrs. Jackson, the front door was locked. I couldn't get in."
"Oh, right, the lock. You need a key."
I bowed my head shyly and chewed my gum as hard as I could to try to control my nervous tendencies. I took another piece of gum and shoved it in my mouth. It only helped a little. I put in another piece and the urge to do something like play the piano or judo-flip somebody went away.
"Rebecca, did you see what those old ladies did?"
I nodded. "They cut the yarn. She was looking at me and she cut the string." I was starting to freak out, but a seventh piece of gum stopped that.
"Lets go inside." They glanced at each other nervously and we walked into the house that wanted me dead.
