"Wh-What?" Frisk stumbled, surprised at what her sister had just said. She just couldn't believe it, leaving the village? The idea seemed impossible! "B-But why? Life here is fine! People like us, we have food, we have shelter, what more do we need? Chara!"
Chara gave Frisk a stern glare, but said nothing. She continued to gather their belongings - clothes, precious items, blankets, etc - and putting them into their backpacks. Chara turned, but Frisk grabbed her shoulder stopping her.
"Chara, please, you can't just say something like that and then expect me to just go along with it! You have to tell me, why are we-"
"IT'S BECAUSE WE'RE NOT LIKE THEM FRISK!" Chara suddenly exclaimed, turning to her sister. Frisk cowered - She had never seen Chara get this angry before. Sure, she used to get really mad when they first came here when the other children talked about them behind their backs, but that was a long time ago.
"..W..What do you mean, "not like them..?" " Frisk meant to ask, but it came out as more of a whisper. Chara looked conflicted, like she wished very badly to tell her sister, but she couldn't bear to.
"..Frisk.. I.."
"What do you mean, "Not like them?" " Frisk repeated, but it was no longer a whisper. Chara's lip trembled, and Frisk grabbed her sister's shoulders, and looked at her intensly, but in a calm, gentle manner.
Chara let out a sigh, and brushed Frisk's hands off her shoulders.
"Frisk, you know how humans have different colored souls..?" Chara started, and paused, allowing Frisk to nod her head. She continued. "Well, human souls mainly consist of six colors, representing six traits of that soul. Green is Kindness ; Yellow is Justice ; Light Blue is Patience ; Blue is Integrity ; Orange is Bravery ; and Purple is Perseverance."
"Yeah, that's basic knowledge" Frisk frowned, still not understanding.
"You see.." Chara started, and then trailed of. "Frisk, bring out your soul for a second"
"Wha- Okay.." Frisk brought out their soul, which was a bright scarlet.
"See," Chara brought out her own, similar soul, which wasn't as bright as Frisk's, but it was still a scarlet red. "Our souls aren't any of the six colors humans usually have." Frisk blinked, and realized Chara's words were true. She hadn't really noticed the difference from her soul to the souls of the children of the village.
"What, so we're abominations?" Frisk said, but Chara shook her head.
"No, red souls are just.. Rare." Chara peeked out the window, and then continued. "There are stories, although they're more like rumors, about what the red soul can do. The soul's trait is Determination, and they are believed to be able to reset timelines. Now, I'm not really sure what that means, but most likely we can go back in time. But the- uuuh" Chara looked at Frisk, who's eyes were shimmering with excitement.
"Back in time? So we're time travelers? Cool!"
"No, No, No," Chara sighed, shaking her head. "As I was saying, Red Souls are very powerful, and most say the human mages with red souls are the one that created the barrier. But, for some reason, one day all the red souls just.. Disappeared. Most believe they died, or went into hiding. In any case, the King announced something a few years back. Any humans with red souls are to be executed immediately." Chara finished with a grim look on their face. Frisk's bright look in their eyes had faded, and now she just stood in horror.
"Executed?! Isn't that a bit severe?"
"Not really."
"But.."
"The point is, the king is able to see souls, so we can't stay here."
"Surely we can reason with him-!" Frisk pleaded. Chara gave her a saddened look, but shook her head.
"We have to go. Staying here could be dangerous, and I'm not taking any chances." Chara zipped up her backpack, and slung it over her shoulder. "Hurry, go gather everything you need. We leave under the cover of night."
Frisk let out a sigh, but went to go gather her things. Chara watched her go, and her stomach knotted up. She had never seen Frisk get upset over something like this.
Needless to say, she didn't like it.
