Chapter 2

“Sewer grates, cockroaches, normal beds with hands grabbing me from underneath, a sewer grate with cockroaches swarming out of it under a normal bed with hands underneath.” She muttered to herself in my sleep.  She tossed and turned a few more times and then woke up. Pinching herself to make sure she was awake, she walked to the kitchen. The cup slowly turned as the microwave heated the milk to the perfect temperature. Drinking it, she immediately felt safe. She slowly walked back to my room and crawled on her bed. In the perfect temperature and in her super comfy bed she fell to sleep quickly.

Rosemary did her usual routine; made some hot cocoa and slowly sipped it while reading news ads on the internet.  Her older sister Primrose walked in and said sarcastically “Good morning sunshine.”

Rosemary was in a bad mood this morning and replied sarcastically back, “Good morning sunshine.”

“Time to get up we are leaving to grandma’s and grandpa’s house in 40 minutes.” Primrose quickly said.

“Already,” Rosemary said, “I just got up; all things considered I think I should get another hour of rest.”

“We must be on time.”

“Why are you so serious all the time, can’t you have a little bit of fun?”

“I can have fun, with my friends, not with an annoying little brat of a sister.”

“Me a brat, have you listened to yourself lately, can I have that car, can I have those clothes, can I have a TV, can I have a new cell phone, and can I have a laptop. If I were you I wouldn’t call other people brats.”

“Well at least I have friends, not just one but many.”

“Whatever, I’ll be ready in 40 minutes.” Rosemary said angrily. Primrose should not have gone there. She thought.

“Thank you.”

Rosemary quickly got dressed and ate breakfast. Grabbing her DS she started to play cook-mania. The seconds blended into minutes and before she knew it she had to go to her grandparent’s house.  They hopped in the car and drove past the old scientist Yohansin. They waved kindly but were rewarded with a scowl.  She felt a twinge of sadness of the poor man’s life. Growing tired of cook-mania, Rosemary fell asleep.

A few hours later they got to the small town of Lovelock, and to their grandparent’s house. Their grandparents lived in a small six roomed house. Once they entered the small house, grandparents called Rosemary’s parents to their private study to have a conference.  Rosemary was more than content to just play cook-mania, so she wouldn’t be bored when she waited thirty minutes for their parents.  Her parents walked out and mom said   “We don’t want you guys out at night during our stay here. If we catch you guys out of your beds past ten you will be grounded for the rest of your life.”

“Fine.” Primrose said.

“Okay mom.” Rosemary agreed but not happily

“We mean it.” Dad said.

Rosemary wandered around town for the rest of the day bored. Eventually she decided to go exploring out in the wilderness.   It was a beautiful summer day, the sagebrush rustling in the breeze, the sound of birds in the sky, the sun on her back.  She wished to herself that it could be like this in California.  Sure her city in California has malls, theaters, and all kinds of restaurants, but this town has a beauty that no city can have.  The beauty of the outdoors, the wild animals, and the small houses in distance, which is the beauty that all small towns have.  Although she didn’t want to be here, she couldn’t ignore the beauty.
