What to Come

"Good morning Isis, boys." Professor Leon greeted us at the door.

"Good morning Professor!" We chimed.

"Come along, we'd best bet started. Lots to be done today." Without further explanation he spun around and led us into the compound. The boys all wore excited grins but wouldn't explain anything when I pressed them for answers.

"You'll see." Cam said brightly. I huffed but resigned to following the swishing white lab coat. We piled into the elevator and dropped down several floors then with a ding the door opened.

"It is now safe to disembark the vessel." Felix chirped merrily. Leon chuckled but led the way from the elevator to another changing room where I slipped into the grey sweats and tank top that had been set out for me. Once dressed, Leon led the way to a room bustling with activity. "Welcome to the lab."

Rows of computers filled about half of the room, the other half was taken up by strange machinery. Scientists in white lab coats flitted about like albino hummingbirds. "What are we doing? What am I going to do?" I worried the hem of my shirt between my thumb and forefinger. "Today we will prepare you for transition. Later in the evening you will go into the egg." Leon showed us across the room to a large glass egg. "This is our incubation chamber. This is where the magic happens." Small bubbles floating gently in the bluish liquid. "A note will be sent later today informing Melody of your untimely death. She will have to arrange for a funeral." I raised my hand still watching the bubbles.

"She knows I'm alive, she's been telling the future." A look of surprise crossed Leon's face then he smiled.

"That is marvelous! She can be our information expert." Noting my frown Leon hurried ahead. "Don't worry, we'll take her into protective custody. In about a week time she will leave behind a note and vanish from the public eye. Several days later a body will be pulled from the river bearing her tracking implant." My frown turned to shock.

"Just how many people have you made disappear?" I whispered in horror. Leon smiled secretively.

"Too many." I forced my frown to relax and nodded slowly.

"You'll have to take it up with her."

"Of course." Leon nodded his agreement. "Shall we get started?" I took a deep breath and shook the tension out of my shoulders.

"Okay, let's do this." Felix let out a whoop and skipped along as we headed over to a dentist chair. "This is where we will upload different mixed martial arts, lock picking, bomb defusing or building, and other useful things." I stifled a laugh, I didn't have the heart to tell them that I already knew how to pick several kinds of locks. I hadn't been the most obvious rebellious teen but I sure got in and out of places well. Leon shrugged and motioned for me to sit.

"This is like the matrix." I mumbled perching in the chair.

"That's where we got the idea actually." Leon admitted. Cuffs were locked around my ankles and wrists and a metal headset placed over my head. "Here we go."

It felt like days that I was on that chair and I had a massive headache when I was allowed off. "Easy." Cam caught my arm and steadied me when I stumbled.

"Here." Toby offered me a glass of water which I drank greedily.

"Thanks." I rubbed my temples and sighed.

"Headache?" Cam asked with a knowing smile.

"A hell of one." I mumbled.

"You did well. Would you like some lunch?" My stomach growled as an answer. "I'll take that as a yes." Professor Leon laughed lightly leading us over to a buffet table.
