My Tail

Prologue

It's been like this my whole life. And I know nothing can change it. It's just the way I am. Just like if you have brown hair, or blue eyes. It's just instead, I have a tail. Not a dog tail, or a pig tail. I have a fish tail. Yep, you heard me right, I'm a mermaid. I didn't fall into some bin of neon green toxic liquid and I defiantly wasn't bit by some rabid fish. I was born with my tail. It's weird, my parents are both human, but I am half human and half mermaid.

Hello, my name is Chloe and when I go swimming my legs turn into a tail.

I'm 12 years old and turning 13 next week. I can't wait, my mom says I can finally go to Hawaii! I've wanted to swim there my whole life!

I bet you're wondering why my parents aren't mermaids and I am. The thing is, we don't know. I guess it's like the muggle borns from Harry Potter. They just are magic. I just am a mermaid. My parents were a little weirded out by my situation when I was younger, but now they've gotten used to it. Anyways it's not like when a drop of water hits me I just turn into a mermaid. My legs have to be fully submerged in water for me today transform. Also, I have to wait for my tail do dry of until I can transform back. Although I can will my tail to dry, it does take a lot of mind energy. Imagine thinking you are dry when you're really sopping wet! That's what it's like. I'm getting better at it though.. My record for drying myself is 2:37.

Usually mermaids, when they turn 13, develop superhuman powers. Not necessarily flying or the ability to jump, more like being able to speak to animals or having the ability to swim very fast. That's another reason why I'm so excited for my birthday. I have a feeling that my birthday will change my life.

Looking back on this I can't even attempt to explain how much I agree with my past self on that last statement.
