"You know, it wasn't just the birthmark that gave it away." Bridge said.
We hadn't said anything for several minutes. I had been letting all that he had told me soak in, and even then I wasn't sure I would be able to speak. He had been respectful and silent.
"Then what else?"
"Your eyes."
I turned to look at him.
"My eyes. Of course." I said, more to myself than to him.
"It was difficult at first, you never look anyone in the eye. The night before the last test, when you and I went to the overlook, that was when you finally looked me in the eye. That was when I knew there was something different about you." He said, a small smile tugging at the corners of his mouth.
"I remember that night. You made me feel like I wasn't able to pass that test, so I made sure I did." I mentioned.
"The thing was I didn't know right away--about you being a Healer, I mean. All I could remember was something about different colored eyes. That was it." He sighed. "They're beautiful."
My eyes widened, my face heated up, and a lump stuck in my throat. I cleared my throat and did my best to play off the compliment.
"Well, now what? How are we ever going to make it to safety if we're such a big target?" I asked. The thought had been on my mind since we left.
"I don't know."
We were back to being quiet.
The thought of our commander--our leader--not knowing what our next moves were was frightening.
"I have an idea of a way that we can make sure someone gets to get help." He said at last.
"Alright, let's discuss it with the others and we'll go from there." I told him.
He nodded.
"But for now everyone needs rest. We'll get it together tomorrow, and then figure out when to move on."
"It sounds like a very put together plan." He rose to his feet. "Well, goodnight."
I offered him a smile.
"Goodnight, Bridge." *************************** This is a scene that may or may not be added to my novel The Last Healer. It's a big work in progress, but it will be finished. I'd love if anyone were to ask about the plot! If you have any questions or would like to borrow names or plots feel free to message me.
