I heard the school bell ring at exactly 2:08 pm. Gym class had just ended. I never actually played. I usually just stood behind the tall kids in hopes that the gym teacher wouldn't notice. I went to the locker room and quickly changed out of my gym clothes and back into my normal clothes. I grabbed my floral backpack and phone out of my blue gym locker and walked back into the hallway. I put my earbuds in and turned the volume all the way up. I had Little Things by One Direction on repeat. It's the kind of song that reduces any stress you have. As I neared the front doors of the school I realized it was totally down pouring.
Crap!
I walk home every day from school since my parents work until really late at night. I also don't take the bus because, the girls will gossip and scream at the top of their lungs and the guys will smoke their cigarettes, which hurts my lungs. I reached into my backpack to look for my purple zip up sweatshirt. As I did this, it occurred to me that I left it in the public library last week. That's where I spend most of my time. I'm someone who doesn't really get along with people so reading is my escape. I decided it's just water and I'd be fine. I put my phone back into my bag not wanting it to get wet. I started toward the doors, ready to walk home in the rain.
As I was walking along the cement side walk, I heard snickering and laughs, which sounded like they were coming from guys. I looked up to see a group of jocks laughing at me. I just kept walking even though I was slightly confused as to what was so amusing. Everything seemed fine until I heard one of the boys say "Nice hot pink bra!"
What? How would he know what color my-
I looked down only to realize I had a white shirt on, and my hot pink Victoria's Secret bra was totally visible. I was just about to break down and start crying when I heard a car door slam. I looked over to see a tall boy with messy hair and piercing blue eyes running toward the jocks. Oh great another asshole to bother me. Or so I thought. The unfamiliar boy started screaming. Not at me, but at the jocks? What was he doing?
"How dare you laugh at that girl. She's walking home in the rain, with no jacket, in a short sleeve shirt, all by herself, and you choose to point out that you could see through her shirt!?" The boy was yelling so loudly the guys jumped back a little bit but, he wasn't finished yet. "None of you could offer your coat to her like gentlemen? You're disgusting. All of you. Apologize right now" he put emphasis on the right now.
All of the jocks muttered out a Sorry and ran for the hills, scared that this boy was going to beat them up. Out of the corner of my eye I could've sworn that he showed them his fingers. One of them.
I stood there shocked. I knew this boy. He was really popular. He had so many friends and I didn't think he knew I existed. But he stopped his car and yelled at these guys for me?
"Sorry if I scared you. Those guys are idiots. Please don't listen to them." He spoke softly now. He placed his big hands on my shoulders and looked down at me. I was on the shorter side of life, only being 4'11 and he was almost six foot. All of a sudden his eyes bulged. "Oh my god. You must be freezing." He took his bulky jacket off of his body and wrapped it around me. No boy could be this perfect. I couldn't help but wonder if someone paid him to do this or if it was a dare.
"Love, why would you even try to walk in this weather?" He called me love. It made my heart skip a beat.
"It's only rain." I responded quietly.
"You're soaking wet. I'm driving you the rest of the way home. I'm not letting you walk in this. You'll be sick by tomorrow if you continue on." Before I could protest he started walking back to the car with me trailing behind him, when he spun back around.
"I'm Hayes by the way." He introduced himself. His name was unique. I liked it.
"(Y/N)." I said quietly. I was still shivering even with Hayes' big football jacket wrapped around me.
He looked back once I said my name and smiled. The smile quickly dropped as the rain got heavier. He started running but I couldn't keep up. In all fairness, his legs were a lot longer Then mine.
"(Y/N)!" He yelled. He ran back noticing that I was far behind him and picked me up. He threw me over his shoulders and sprinted to the car. I couldn't help but laugh at him full on sprinting with me over his shoulders. He was quite fast too.
We neared his car and he opened the passenger door and put me down gently then shut the door. He ran around to the drivers side and hopped in. He quickly shut the door and let out a sigh.
"You didn't have to carry me. I was perfectly capable of walking to your car." I told him this because I felt bad. Was I too heavy for him to lift? Is that why he let out a big sigh?
"You weigh literally nothing. I didn't mind. Unless you mind. Did you not want me to carry you? I won't do it again if you don't want me to." I kissed him to shut him up. I could hear him chuckle into the kiss.
"It's fine." I reassured him and leaned back in my seat. Hayes was so sweet. He just needed to not have a panic attack every five minutes.
"Hey um.... I know we just met but would you wanna go out sometime?" Did Hayes just ask me out!? He's so popular! What does he see in me? Other than my hot pink bra that is. I held back the scream that was building up inside of me and tried to play it cool.
"Yeah. I'd like that" Yes. I didn't over react and scream like an idiot even though I totally wanted to. I saw a smile start to form on his lips.
"So where do you live?" He asked.
"Um. What?" Stalker much.
He rubbed the back of his neck nervously. "Well I was going to drive you home remember? I still don't know where your house is." I was so caught up in Hayes asking me out, I forgot the whole reason I was in his car.
"Oh uhhhh sorry. I live on 7 Eagle street." (Is that even the name of a road? Idk)
We talked the whole way to my house about the most random stuff. We talked about the teachers we liked and disliked, our favorite bands, and somehow even talked about our favorite gum flavors.
I didn't even realize but, we were pulling into my driveway. I saw our small beige house that was quickly coming closer. I looked over at Hayes and then put my hand on the car door handle and was just about to push it when I heard it lock. Hayes grabbed my wrist and pulled me back down into my seat and lightly kissed my cheek.
"So I'll pick you up tomorrow night at 8?" He asked smoothly.
I smiled and replied with, "just unlock the door you little nugget." He unlocked the door and I hopped out of his big car.
"Oh my god. Your jacket. I totally forgot." I totally forgot that I was still wearing his jacket. I started to take it off before he said
"No. Keep it. That way you can't bail out on our date tomorrow. And it like the way it looks on you anyway." We both laughed at his little comment.
"Okay. But I want you to know that I would never bail on you." Come on I'm not evil.
Before I shut the door I heard him say
"See ya tomorrow babe. " and then the door shut and he backed out of the driveway, waving to me and just before he was out of eyesight he winked. I watched him pull away as I stood in our driveway, shell shocked.
