Why?

The closer Sage stared at the man, the more detail she noticed, the more her heart raced. She noticed something strange about this man; his right hand was missing. This piked an interest in her. She put the gun to her side, putting the safety on. She then turned to Lizzie.

"Honey, I'm gonna go out, I'll make it. I promise. Stay in here," Sage promised as she pulled the little girl into her arms.

"Danny promised he would be back, and he hasn't came back," Lizzie mumble as she clung onto Sage. Sage glanced out the tent and noticed the man had dropped his weapon to his side; this was a good thing for the two females. She swallowed down her own sadness to help lock Lizzie's in.

"I know hon, but I promise. You'll be able to see me, and if anything happens, take the guns and everything and haul your ass away. You'll be okay. I'll be okay."

"Sage please!"

"Lizzie, you need to understand that I am doing this for our safety. I'll be fine. I promise. I'll work something out with this man. Who know, maybe he can help us?" Lizzie just sighed and nodded before letting go and extending her pinky.

"Pinky promise?" Sage smiled slightly and wrapped her pinky around Lizze's.

"Pinky promise." Lizzie seemed to find a bit of comfort from that, for she agreed to the plan.

"I love you Lizzie."

"I love you too Sage." Sage looked out the tent one last time before opening the flaps. She took a glance at Lizzie and sighed, knowing she had to do this to secure their living future. She was never good at confrontations, but she had to. She had to live. Lizzie had to live. They all have to live. All lives mattered at this point; there was no denying it. Any help they can get will be the greatest thing to them, even if it is from some random redneck.

The man whipped his gun around and pointed it at Sage, Sage raising hers.

"Who are you and what do you want?" Sage said in a very low tone.

"I ain't tellin ya, and supplies, what the hell do you think I'd be searching for?" The man spit back.

"Well, I would've guessed a fight, but I guess I'm wrong." The man lowered his gun and growled while Sage put the safety on her gun and folded her arms, her hip sticking out a bit.

"Shut up. Do ya have anything?" He was clearly annoyed by Sage's response, but she did not care. She needed to be tough.

"Not enough to share. We have two energy bars left and that's it. That's all going to Lizzie. She's still a growing girl, she needs the energy" She almost immediately regretted bringing Lizzie up.

"Gimme one of 'em,"

"No. Why should I? We need to eat too, and you are bigger."

"Cause I said. Now give me the damn bar." After that comment, Lizzie poked her head out.

"J-just give it to him s-so we can get on," she whispered to Sage as she softly tugged on Sage's shirt.

"Honey, you need it. This redneck here is bigger and full grown. He doesn't need it as urgent. We are both smaller, mainly you," Sage replied.

"We can sacrifice one."

"Seems like the girl has more common sense than you," the man snapped. Sage just scoffed while thinking of a compromise she could possibly make to get out of this. Then one popped into her mind.

"What if we pair up. You, me, and Lizzie." IT was the man's turn to scoff.

"As if bitch." he growled.

"Watch your fucking language in front of the kid. Now get the bar Lizzie."

"Says the one who cusses."

"Give me a name."

"You first bitch." Lizzie popped out again and handed the bar to Lizzie. The man reached for it.

"Nuh uh uh, not until I get a name." A smirk crawled across Sage's face.

"Fine fuck. Merle Dixon." He was grumbling curse words under his breath, and Sage couldn't help but let a snicker out.

"Sage Jackson." She handed the bar over. "Now get the fuck outta my sight before I put a bullet in your head.

"Fine. Didn't want to stay with you fuckers anyways." Merle stomped away, leaving the two females alone.

"Score one for Lizzie and Sage, score zero for Merle," Sage snickered before turning to Lizzie. "Pack up the stuff. I'm gonna go check the perimeter for any walkers. I'll be back in a few." Lizzie reluctantly went back in the tent, handing a knife to Sage and exchanging it for the gun.

"Remember Lizzie, don't take the safety off unless you are in major danger. Don't shoot unless you are in major danger, If I hear a gunshot, I will come racing back, I promise," Sage reminded. Lizzie just nodded throughout it all. She had been told this thousands of times before, and will hear if thousands of times again.

"I know Sage. Be safe." Lizzie jumped forward and squeezed Sage. "I love you."

"I love you too hon." Sage pulled the knife out and began to walk forwards, looking back at the tent a couple of times. By the third time she turned around, Lizzie was in the tent. She was a good girl.

Sage crept around, her small weight and frame serving as an advantage. Because of her smallness, she didn't make much noise. She noticed a lone walker strutting its way towards her. She met it halfway and injected the knife into the top of its head, killing the beast. The smell blew up in her face. No matter how many she killed, the smell always hit her, mainly after her illness. She shivered before stepping over the body and moving on.

CRUNCH!

What was that? Sage thought. Her thoughts were interrupted by a moan. Thank god it's only a walker. She turned around to be greeted by three. Now this could be a problem. The first one was inching closer and closer, and Sage was inching further and further away. She wasn't sure if she could take out all three at once. Sage swallowed her fear and walked up to the first one, stabbing it, killing it. The next one wasn't far behind, and was coming straight towards her. She stepped back again and again, the walkers following her.

"Shit," she mumbled.

A gunshot rippled through the air. The noise came from the camp.

"Fuck. LIZZIE!" Sage screamed. As she went to go around the walkers and make a beeline back to camp, a walker grabbed her shoulder, tugging her back. She struggled to get out of its grip as the other two inched closer. She was surely dead. There was no saving her now. Something whizzed by her and shot down the walker that was inching closer to her. Maybe there is a slight chance of hope. Sage threw her arm back, trying to stab the creature that was trying to rip her flesh off. After many attempts, she ended up nailing it. It fell to the ground, taking her with it. Her head hid the ground, and she felt the world grow dizzy. Before her vision grew black, she noticed a figure take down the next walker.

"Lizzie..." Sage groaned.

"God dammit," a male voice husked.

"I need to get Lizzie." She attempted to get up, but fell back down. She extended her hand, hoping the male would take it. He sighed and took it.

"Where's the girl?"

"Follow me..." Her voice was thin and her body was weak. She clung to the man's shoulder as she began to limp back to camp. "I need her to be alive... for him..."
