Righty, so just to ruin your impression of me, why not start this book off with a sad one-shot?
:D
Sorry, I specialize in sad stuff.
~Noctila aka WolfieShe Can't Hear You-Percabeth AU
If the blazing light didn't wake Perseus Jackson, the explosion certainly did.
He was asleep in his school clothes from the day before when the resounding boom echoed around the neighborhood and was immediately followed by the hiss and crackle of flames.
Instantly, he jumped up and dashed outside. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Nico di Angelo, his neighbor and best friend, emerge from his house, but he was too busy staring, horrified, at the burning wreckage of the red Maserati next to a telephone pole.
A red Maserati?
Just then, the passenger door opened, and a soot-black figure toppled out, unconscious. Percy ran over and tried to help the person up, but the person slid to the ground. He brushed aside some soot and instantly realized who was in his arms.
Annabeth Chase.
Oh gods, her. Percy's crush since grade one. Heck, Piper McLean, Percy's friend, often said that they would be perfect for each other. Sadly, she was taken...
Percy whipped around. If Annabeth was in the car, then only one person could be driving. After gently setting Annabeth down in the garden in front of his house, he dashed over to the burning car and prised open the boiling hot door. Luke Castellan, Annabeth's boyfriend, was slumped over the steering wheel, blood trickling from his forehead and one corner of his mouth. Percy tugged at his body but couldn't move it until another pair of hands grabbed Luke's arm and dragged him out. He stared at Nico di Angelo as the first sirens began to pierce the air.
"Stop gaping, you look like a fish," Nico sullenly said.
Percy closed his mouth and without a word, him and Nico hefted up Luke's body and carried him over to the garden.
Sirens wailing, a fireman's truck and an ambulance raced over to the scene, screeching to a halt around twenty meters away. Two familiar figures leapt down and raced towards Percy and Nico.
"Valdez, Solace," Nico greeted Leo and Will.
"Hey," Leo panted, shaking his curly brown hair. "Dad's here with his firefighting team, and when I heard the crash was in front of your houses I roped in Will and his doctor father. Who's hurt?"
"A-Annabeth... and Luke," Percy choked out.
"WHAT!" Leo exploded. He looked up at the sky. "Why another of our friends? What did we do to anger you?" He yelled to the heavens, gesturing at Annabeth and Luke's bodies.
Percy felt the same way. Their gang had originally consisted of thirteen members: Percy, Nico, Annabeth, Piper, Jason, Frank, Hazel, Calypso, Leo, Reyna, Thalia and Luke. But since their gang had been formed, Frank had moved to Canada, and since they were dating, Hazel had joined him there a month later. As for Calypso, she had gone missing two and a half years ago, last seen near the sea and no one had found any traces of her since. Calypso's departure had stung Leo really badly, as he'd loved Calypso and after she went missing, he'd never been the same, more serious and moody instead of his usual joking manner. Instead, he was putting extra effort to make sure their gang didn't split up again, but sometimes even that didn't help. Two years ago, Thalia had been on a plane when it crashed, and she'd been in a coma since, hooked up to life support in the hospital. Even though she wasn't dead, as Nico often said, she was technically useless. Percy could understand Leo.
"I'm getting the gang down here," Percy stood up and dug out his phone from his pocket. He dialed Jason's number, then heard him pick up.
"Perce-wha? It's four in the morning! What-"
