Sam's POV
"I've been in this business long enough to know that you're going to run a background check on me," I nodded. "You're being careful and I understand that."
"It's funny," Kat nodded. "I've never been so careful in my life until I went on a date with a demon." i looked at her. "The guy was a very sweet guy. I didn't know he was a demon until we walked under the demon trap in my parents garage and he got stuck there."
"Must've sucked, huh?" I asked.
"Yeah," Kat nodded. "Because I had really liked the guy but he was already dead and the demon was the only thing keeping him alive."
"Sammy?" Dean called.
"Dean," I looked up. "Dean!" Dean showed up at the window. "Dean, get us out of here."
"Windows and doors are locked," Dean nodded.
"Her corpse," Kat stated.
"What?" Dean asked.
"Her body, it's buried in the backyard," I stated. "Salt and burn the bones."
"Where is she buried?" Dean asked.
"North of the big oak tree," Kat nodded. Dean walked away. "Dean!" He popped up in the window. "Be careful. She's a witch."
"You could've put that in your notes," Dean replied and left.
"I guess your brother likes details," Kat sighed.
"If you mentioned a witch ghost in your research, we would've had a different approach to the situation," I nodded. "We probably wouldn't be stuck in this salt circle either."
"I'll try to remember that," Kat nodded. The windows and doors started opening and closing like crazy. I pulled Kat closr to me. It was an instinct. "Dean's getting close!"
"What?!" I asked.
"Dean's almost done!" Kat replied. The glass on the windows broke and I shielded her from the debris. "He needs to hurry up!" After another two minutes or so, the noises stopped. "Did he do it?"
"Sammy?" Dean called. He walked in holding a bag. "You guys okay?"
"Yeah," I nodded. "Kat?"
"Not really," Kat sighed. We looked at her as she removed her hand from her abdomen. She had a piece of glass sticking out from her. "I have to get to the hospital."
"Yeah, okay," I nodded. "Come on."
"It hurts so bad," Kat nodded.
"We're going to get you to the hospital," I nodded. I helped her to her car and got into the passenger side. "Dean, you're following behind." I got in her car and started driving. "Which name do I use?"
"I still have a normal life," Kat replied. "Just use Katherine Hardwell."
"Okay," I replied. "Just hand in there, Kat." I got her to the hospital and I think she was unconscious. I let the doctors take care of her. "I hope she's alright."
"She's going to be fine, Sam," Dean nodded. "We gotta hit the road."
"No," I nodded.
"What?" Dean asked.
"I really think we should add Kat to our group," I replied. "You're always saying you need an extra pair of hands."
"You seriously think Kat is ideal for this job?" Dean asked.
"Yeah, I do," I nodded. "She kept calm while she was bleeding out."
"Agents?" the doctor walked out to us. "Your friend will be just fine. The piece of glass didn't hit anything major but I'm going to suggest she takes it slow the next three days."
"Thank you, doctor," I nodded. Dean and I walked into her room. "Dean, she can hunt and she's a pretty good one."
"Does she know all the research?" Dean asked. "I just don't understand how it's going to work."
"Dean, she has a photographic memory," I replied. I looked at Dean. "Can we at least have one brotherly conversation or once?"
"What do you want to know?"
"Love," I sighed.
"Love? Well, Sammy, that's a difficult subject for me."
"Yeah, you're the one night stand kind of guy but I'm serious. You're the only one I can basically talk to about this."
"You're serious?" Dean looked at me and I nodded. "Alright, well, what do you need to know?"
"Dean, I like Kat, I really do but she's planning to do an in-depth background check on me."
"Just ask her out," Dean replied. "It wouldn't be the first time you got shot down."
"Guys, I'm drugged, not deaf," Kat replied, groggily from her bed. I rushed to her bedside. "You're serious, aren't you Sam?"
"I couldn't be more serious," I nodded. "What do you say? You want to?"
"Sure," Kat smiled. I held her hand. "It shouldn't hurt since we know what we're up against anyways."
"Right," I smiled. I picked up her charts. "Let's see when your release date is."
"You're funny," Kat replied. "They plan to keep me over night till it heals."
"Till what heals?" Dean asked.
"My cut," Kat replied. "I could've basically bled to death."
"Katherine," a guy walked in and gave her a hug. "Why didn't you call me?"
"Who called you?" Kat asked.
"Nurses found my card in your pocket," he replied.
"Who are you?" I asked.
"Who are you?" the guy asked as he looked at me.
"Please don't fight," Kat groaned in pain. "Sam, this is NYPD Detective Nick Amaro. Nick, this is my boyfriend, Sam Winchester. Back there is Dean Winchester, Sam's brother."
"Boyfriend?" Nick nodded.
"Yeah," I replied.
"Guys, don't," Kat replied.
"What happened to you?" Nick asked.
"I ---"
"She fell through a window," I finished for her.
"I wasn't asking you, I was asking her," Nick stated.
"He was with me," Kat replied. Nick started pacing in front of her bed. "They called you because you're the police."
"I'm more than just a SVU detective to you, Katherine," Nick replied.
"Special Victims Unit?" I asked. "Now I'm very confused."
"Nick is my guardian," Kat replied. "My dad knew him since he was five. He made Nick promise that he'll look after me no matter what when I was only ten years old."
"So he knows what you do?" I asked.
"Yeah, he knows I'm a supernatural hunter," Kat nodded.
"I'm guessing this happened during a case," Nick looked at her. "Kat, tell me what really happened."
"I was hunting a ghost," Kat replied. "She turned out to be a witch. These guys wanted to help me out. I didn't mind." I looked at Kat. "They're just like me, Nick. They're hunters."
"What happened on the case?" Nick asked.
"Well, Sam and I got locked inside the house because the witch wouldn't let us leave so we were there for quite a while until Dean came," Kat sighed. "He salted and burn her bones. While he was digging her up, she was pretty hateful. The windows and doors were opening and closing like crazy." Dean crossed his arms. "The glass on the windows broke. Sam shielded me from much of the debris but one hit me. That's how I ended up in here."
"I told you this would be a dangerous thing for you to do," Nick replied. "You and your parents won't listen to me. Kat, I can't just stand here and watch you waste your life away."
"Nick, I'm going to find the demon who killed my parents," Kat replied. "I'm not going to stop now. I'm so close."
"Kat, this thing you have against Ruby, you gotta let it go," I nodded. "You should listen to Nick." I couldn't believe I was actually agreeing with this guy, even though I met him for a split second. "You don't want tt be a hunter for the rest of your life."
"You don't know what my life was like," Kat replied.
"Perfect family? Perfect grades?" I asked. "The perfect life?" Kat looked at me. "I had that. Trust me."
"Yeah, Sam ran away from home when he was eighteen and he went to California," Dean replied. "He had an interview with Stanford and he was going to attend college." Kat looked at Dean. "Our dad never returned so I went to get him to help me find him."
"We never found him but after I got home, I found Jessica on the ceiling," I added. "She died in a fire just like my mother did. Well, more cases passed. We finally found our father but our father had died because he sold his soul to keep Dean alive."
"And we killed the son of a bitch too," Dean stated.
"Katherine had a full ride to NIU or she could've just went straight into any police academy and come out as a detective," Nick replied. "Instead, she insisted that she go on this path that her parents were on. Kat, you had one year to be in the academy and come out a detective. You'll be on a force, with a badge."
"Yeah, make myself a target in front of more dangerous criminals rather than those who are dead?" Kat asked. "Thanks but no thanks. I'll rather be a hunter."
"Supernatural beings are far worst than your normal criminals," I replied. "You can kill a criminal but it takes a lot more to kill a supernatural being."
"Sam, I heard you say you wanted me to join you guys and help you guys out," Kat replied. "Now you're going to throw me right back to the sidelines? No, I'm not going to stop being a hunter."
"There's always going to be evil to fight," I nodded. "Take some time off."
"If I become an officer, there's no coming back to this," Kat nodded. "I'm not joining the force."
"You don't have to," Nick nodded. "I can talk to Olivia Benson and ---"
"No," Kat stated. "I'm not joining any police department or unit."
"You were a stubborn child," Nick nodded. "How did your parents deal with you?"
"They didn't," Kat replied. "They were on hunts, remember?" Nick sighed. "Why don't we make a deal?"
"What do you propose?" Nick asked.
"I team up with the Winchester brothers and check in every six months," Kat replied.
"Three months," Nick nodded.
"Four," Kat stated. "Also, if I end up in the hospital again, Sam or Dean is to call you."
Nick looked at me. "You promise to take care of my little sister?" he asked.
"I'll protect her with my life," I nodded.
"You give them my number," Nick looked at Kat. "I expect to hear from you in four months."
"Okay," Kat nodded. Nick left. "That's what I forgot to do."
"What?" Dean asked.
"Take his card out of my pocket," Kat sighed. "Well, you guys got me on your team."
"Yeah, not the way I wanted it to happen but I guess it'll work for now," I nodded. "Kat, why didn't you tell me all of those things I just found out today?"
"Because," Kat replied. "I know you'll tell me to quit and I won't."
"Alright," I sighed. "Why don't you get some rest? Dean and I will check to see if we can find a case after you get out tomorrow."
"Don't leave me alone," Kat nodded.
"Why?" Dean asked.
"Uhm, hello?" Kat asked. "I'm a hunter."
"One of us gotta stay here," Dean looked at me. "Have fun, Sammy."
"Dean," I sighed as Dean left. "Okay. I knew that was going to happen."
"Sam," Kat replied. "Don't do that."
"Do what?" I asked.
"The eyes," Kat nodded. "The puppy eyes. You get me all flustered."
"I do?" I asked. Kat nodded. "I won't." I leaned closer to her face. "When we have some free time, we should go on a real date."
"You want to?" Kat asked. I nodded. "Okay."
"Okay," I smiled. I gave her a kiss. "You know you're adorable?"
"Stop," Kat giggled. I kissed her cheek and sat on the chair. She looked at her window. "Sam, who's the confused guy over there?"
I looked. "That's Castiel," I sighed. "Do you want to meet Cas?"
"Well, he looks obviously confused," Kat replied. "Why don't you invite him in?"
"Okay," I replied. "Just hear me out after I invite him in."
