John Winchester and Michael:
Leviticus 19:19 reads, "You are to keep My statutes. You shall not breed together two kinds of your cattle; you shall not sow your field with two kinds of seed, nor wear a garment upon you of two kinds of material mixed together." The last one is pretty much describing plaid, which as we all know the Winchesters' wardrobe of choice for unknown reasons. John Winchester raised Sam and Dean to wear plaid at practically all times. I think he knew about their destiny as vessels (at least Dean's) for archangels (perhaps Michael told him his son would be his true vessel when John was his before Sam and Dean were born) and that as a little hopefully unnoticed attempt at making heaven see them as sinners and not worthy of being vessels, therefor ridding them of that burden that would most likely kill them.
