As the crisp morning air blew through the windows and the sun started to peek over the horizon, my alarm clock began to ring. I turned over, trying to ignore the annoying sound. The alarm clock continued ringing, much to my dismay. I tried, to no avail, to go back to sleep. Then when I finally had it, i turned around to turn my alarm off. That was when I saw the time, and remembered what day it was. Immediately, I jumped off my bed.

Today is the first day of high school.

I took a quick shower and put on the best clothes I could find. My room was in a mess and I was honestly too lazy to clean it, so all I did was make my bed. I stuffed my laptop into my bag, along with everything else to put into my dorm, before heading down for breakfast. Although I was not late, I wanted to leave a good first impression. My mom had laid out a feast in front of me, pancakes, sausages and eggs, but I scoffed it all down within a few minutes.

"Good luck John, hope you have a great first day!" my mom called out from the kitchen as I left the house.

"Thanks Mom!" I called back, before heading to the nearby train station.

After a rather short train ride, I finally got off the train. I walked for a few minutes, before I reached my school. Stamford High, one of the best high schools in America. The campus was intimidatingly huge, much larger than his high school campus. Students were streaming into the building, some were talking to each other, while the others were just walking along. I headed towards the dorms and it was not long before I found mine. I opened the door and noticed another guy in the dorm. He had already finished packing and was looking at hiis phone, as if he was waiting for someone. Then, upon realising my presence, he looked up.

"Oh! Hello! My name's James, you must be my roommate." James said cheerfully, looking up from his phone.

"Hi, my name's John, great to meet you." I replied, not really knowing what else to say.

James looked down at his phone again and said,"You better hurry and pack your stuff. Orientation starts at 8. We need to be at the lecture hall by then."

I nodded and quickly got to work, not sparing any second as I dumped everything out. There were two beds and two desks, one for each person, and a wardrobe to be shared. I put all my stuff accordingly and shoved my clothes into the wardrobe. After I was done, James finally looked up from his phone.

"Ready?" He asked.

I got my phone and put on the slingbag I brought. He also took his slingbag and the two of us headed for the lecture hall.

On the way there, he asked for my contact. After that, we continued walking and went past the girl dormitories. Most of the people was heading this way as it was the quickest way to the lecture halls. James and I were getting to know each other better when someone called out his name.

"Hey James! Over here!" A girl called out.

I looked around the area and James began searching too. Then, I spotted a girl waving her hands frantically. I signalled to James and he immediately whipped out his phone before making his way there.

"Oh. Hi Joyce," He said, trying to act nonchalant. But he was failing. Really, really failing. His face began to redden and he was again failing to hide it. I snickered, knowing that James was totally crushing on Joyce. He looked at Joyce, but she didnt seem to notice. Or she was hiding it really well.

"And who's this?" Joyce suddenly asked, turning to face me.

"Oh! Thats John, my roommate," James quickly replied, his blush finally fading.

"Hi! Nice to meet you." I said, smiling.

Joyce looked me over, as if she was studying me, before saying,"Joycelyn. But you can call me Joyce. Now come on, or we are going to be late."

She dragged James along playfully as I followed close behind, with James still looking down at his phone, still failing at trying to be nonchalant. Rolling my eyeballs, I shoved my hands into my pocket and sighed,"Roommate is crushing on some girl already. Great. Just great. Welcome to high school me. You are going to be having a long year ahead."
