Reagan's POV
Do something! my wolf urged as the vampire stalked closer, cackling at me. How the thing even got near enough for this--to set up a trap, catch me in it, and come to collect--I had no clue. Weren't there pack members running patrol around our perimeter? Where were they? Someone was probably going to get demoted for this.
The vampire had stopped mocking me now and was focused intently on my bleeding leg. Zeroing in on its target. Adrenaline raced through my veins as I became more frantic for escape. No way would I sit back and allow that thing to feed from me. Yes, I wouldn't be in danger of getting changed since my shifter genetics already prevented that, but he could drain me. And even if he didn't, the last thing I wanted was to be food for a vamp.
Prepared to howl again, I made a tiny bit of headway in ripping my leg from the trap. This would have been so much easier in human form--my hands could force the damn thing open--but shifting back would not have been a good idea. Body parts shifted in the process and I did not want to drive the claws further in, or lodge them in a part of me that would have been irreparable. So I was stuck in wolf form, ripping my leg quite literally from its capture.
Suddenly, a large for blurred past, colliding with the vampire. Keeping an eye to the rolling figures, I worked faster to get my leg free, ignoring the trickles of pain I felt even through my adrenaline rush. I finally, finally eradicated myself from the metal at the same time the pair on the ground stopped rolling. Remington rested on top, choking the enemy vamp out. He leaned close to the struggling guy's face and snarled something I didn't catch. I was too busy staying awake, since my adrenaline was fading and pain mixed with displaced fear caused blackness to work at the edge of my vision. I did see the spittle fly out of his mouth and into the other vampire's face, though.
The next thing I knew, I was flying through the woods. Wait, no. Not flying. I was being carried. In human form. Naked human form. Cautiously, I looked up to see my bodyguard glaring at the path ahead of us.
But apparently he knew I was conscious because he snarled, "So. Fucking. Stupid."
I couldn't stop myself from flinching at the pure anger and disappointment dripping from his words. The only response I could think of was one rooted in my current embarrassment. I mean, I was naked. "We need to stop for my clothes." Crap, my voice held no authority.
Remington took the barest portion of a second to narrow his eyes down at me. "Stupid." Then, gaze back up, he said, "We aren't stopping. I'm discreetly getting you checked out and then you are going to your motherfucking room. End of story. You can find clothes there."
Confusion joined my embarrassment. "What?"
"I told you, Reagan," he said, tone hard. "I fucking told you not to avoid me. That going out without me put you in danger. And I fucking told you I was not losing my job." He huffed out a heavy breath. "But you did it anyway. You went out for whatever goddamn reason. And you ran into trouble. So yeah, we're being incredibly discreet about this because I'm not losing my job over your stupidity."
My mind spun, trying to figure out how to respond. Technically, it was way too easy to sneak past him. But that wasn't something I could say, since he was furious and it was also unfair. I'd slipped out in the middle of the night. Even vampires needed to sleep. "I just wanted to go for a run." Did that sound as whiny to him as it did to me?
Remington's scoff held a tinge of mockery to it. "Oh, really? Your extra hard beta's daughter life got so tough you had to go out for a run without letting the person charged with your protection know? Because I also fucking told you to come get me when you wanted to run. I would have gone with you."
