She sat on window sill watching a crow stand on the wire connecting to sad-faced building, Saint Mary's girls orphanage. The black crow had a trace of silver feathers on his wide wings, His claws were grasping the powerline. The sky was as gray as stone skipping the river intertwining the city. The crow stud there, lonely and waiting;for what the little girl did not know. It reminded Cora of herself. She had long red hair with freckles that splattered her face. Her eyes were green as the grass that sat upon the Mansion across town. The difference between Cora and this lonely bird, was that she knew what she was waiting for. She was waiting for the perfect family to take her home, someone that would care that it was her tenth birthday. With no luck she descended from the old, cracked and discolored ledge with a crek of the floor she turned to face reality. An old salmon pink room was scattered with ricketty bunkbeds and bleached sheets. She had finished her daily chores, her studies. She was free to do anything she wanted. The freckled face girl had been there since she could remember and she have never made a friend that stayed at the home for long. Unlike Holly and Emma who had come her the same year as Cora had and never had been separated. Found
on the doorstep of the orphanage, a note saying her birthday and name, a wicker basket and a white blanket covering young Cora.
As she took her way down the wooden stairs she stumble upon a nail, in which she up and brought to the garbage located in the kitchen. As she looked at the clock she saw that the day had gone by and it was time for dinner. The girls were crowded like sand on the beach entering the dining room. Cora did not desire to have dinner today. So she once again climb the wooden stair, forgetting why she came down to the common area, to her old pink room. As she sat down on her bed.A strong gash of wind hit her hard in the face, rattling the beds, pushing the sheets on the far wall. Cora slammed her eyes tight . When the wind settled, she saw a woman in front of her. She pushed herself backwards slamming her head against the bed poll. Rubbing her head. She observed the woman standing in front of her. Her hair was blond like the sun, skin pale, she had a burgundy tee-shirt with some cargo shorts. they was a strange symbol written on her shirt.
The strange women walks towards her. Cora was filled with fear, tears taking over her eyes.,The puzzling woman said to her, "Hello, my name is Lea." Cora still speechless, just sat there, "I am from Camp Forga."Cora finds the courage to say, "Cora... my name is...Cora"Lea smiles and says "Hello, Cora" she continues speaking about Camp Forga, "Camp Forga is a camp for kids just like you."The young girl look confused a says, "Orphans?". Lea take her turn to be confused and says "No, kids with special powers" she replies faster than an a bullet, "I am not special, I have no power". Lea laughs and says, "Of course you do you are the daughter of Dryna" he continues speaking Cora afraid, angry but relieved that once apone a time she had a mom. "At camp you will learn your power,to use it, and control it." Cora still and bit confused about seeing a woman appear from mid-air and finding out she may be... special. "I have no money". Lea laughs once again. " That doesn't matter camp is just a place where you can express yourself without the fear. Cora has been an orphan for as long as she could remember, "Mother? Who is Dryna." She responds confused, "You don't know the story of your mother?!, Cora shaking her head slowly, Dryna was a wonderful person. She started and protected Camp Forga from those who did not wish to educate the youth in their powers. She guided the camp though the treacheries. She was a wonderful person...and mother. Then a terrible person took her live." Cora felt like crying, "Who?How...Who?" Lea lead her eyes to the ground, sadly, "No one knows." They sat there quietly just thinking like a griffin on a manison trim.
After about a minute Lea continued,
"Camp Forga is awaiting you if you want to come?" Cora took a deep breath and said, "Of course."
Lea was standing up and she had her arm out, "Hold on", I looked at her puzzled but I ignored my confusion and held her arm. One, two, three and we were off. We were hovering above the city. Roof of all colors;green grass. Tiny dots of people scurried around.Oxygen low;goosebumps mounting. In Cora's shivering voice she yelled, "What's happening!" Lea said calmly and smiling as far as the moon, "My powers."
Cora saw her school, a sprinkle of cars and grasshopper green till the eyes view and back. She saw the sun as big as China in front of me. She asked "if we go this slow, we will never make it." She smiled that same smile she had before. In a matter of seconds we were zooming across the ocean. Everything was a blur. "How far is it?",she asked. Lea was still looking ahead, she answered,"There it is..."She looked ahead, there,in front of her was a huge island. Now that we slowed down, Cora could see little dots of people. There were little houses everywhere. The houses arranged in different colors and sizes.
Lea slowly lowered us to the ground. Cora was usurer to a large brick building. On the outside there was that same triangle shape. There was tall flowers lining the edge. There were eight windows on the face of the building. They headed up to the oak door. Above them was a balcony with white paint covering the wood.Lea and Cora knocked on the door and a small women came to the door. She showed us to another door. Cora had been speechless since the ride over here. Lea looked over at me and said, "We are meeting with Mr. Sycamore. He is the director of camp Forga. He's going to assign you your residence and counselor." She on the door and waited to go in. A weak voice came from the door, "Come in."
In a Large red chair sat an old man. His suit had that same triangle symbol on his top pocket. It was a blue and white color. His face was wrinkled and scared. There was an obvious scar
going across his left cheek to the top of his top lip.His white hair was ruffled. There was an cherry oak desk surrounding him. On the opposing wall was an wall of pictures. They were all dated and smiling kids were in the photos. On the adjacent wall were large bookcases. In the bookcase books were cluttering the selves. Mr.Sycamore was reading the paper. Lea coughed to get his attention and he looked up. He looked over at me and smiled. He said, "You must be Dryna daughter." Cora nodded, " I guess so, My name is Cora."Now he nodded and wrote that down somethings. "You look a lot like your mother when she was little." She looked at him in confusion. He said," I grew up with Dryna. We went to the same school.I was her next door neighbor." Mr. Sycamore got up and turned to the bookcase. On one of the top shelves, he took down a frame. The frame with made from natural wood.
Inside was a picture of a boy and a girl. The boy had brown ruffled hair. He wore a plaid shirt and some cargo shorts. The girl has bright red hair that was tied up in two braids. She had the biggest smile from ear to ear. Her white tee-shirt and some pants were stained. They both had sneakers on.
A smile appeared on Cora's face and a small tear was trickling down into her mouth. The salty taste filled her mouth.
Mr. Sycamore was in a deep conversation with Lea about some camp matters. Cora stood looking down onto the photograph.
Mr. Sycamore looked over, " I almost forgot you were there." Cora looks up to see him peeking over his desk. " So about your living arrangements, you are going to stay in Cabin 7a while we find out your power." Cora nods her head slowly. "And your counselor is Jake. He is not much older than you. He has been here since he was 5. That's why he became a counselor so young."
A grin appears on his face as he says this. He continues by saying, " I hope you enjoy it here at Camp Forga".
