His Obligation (Under Reconstruction)

Chapter Six

When we finally reach the class everyone is already settled in their seats, but the teacher isn't here yet. Holden hands me my books and with one more award winning smile he makes his way to his class. There goes my only friend. The teacher walks in with a coffee mug and tells me to introduce myself to the class. I gotta say, i'm surprised by how cool everyone is. No one treated me weird because I was the new kid. When class finally ended I take a look at my roster again. 218.  Before I can start my journey to the next class someone's hand on my wrist stops me. "What the hell," I turn around so fast I almost get whiplash.

"Sorry Rachel it's just me. The girl from the plane... Caroline?" she hugs me so tight I can't even think straight. I start to cough and she quickly lets go. "I'm so sorry, I keep finding ways to hurt you," she shakes her head scolding her self.

"It's fine, but what are you doing here?" I hug her back. She can't be following me, i'm a nobody.

"I'm not following you." Did I say that out loud? " I go here silly now what's your next class you look really lost." She takes my roster and looks at all my classes. She lets out a loud shriek and everyone turns to look at her.

"What-what is it" I think this girl has ADHD.

"Oh sorry its just we have all the same classes together except for 1st period," she smiles like she's just won the lottery. I shake my head at her craziness.

"Come on before we're late" I let her grab my arm again and we walk to class.

When we finally arrive to the next class i'm amazed by how much I learned about Caroline within the last two minutes. She loves animals. She has the most bubbliest personality and even though she's slightly insane she has this glow about her that you can't help but not to love. Her parents are borderline millionaires, but they're almost never around and she wants to be a veterinarian. I was just about to ask her if she wanted to hang later when an alarm went off. Everyone rushed to the exit.

"Whats going on?" I yell over everyone. Caroline shrugs and yanks me along with everyone else. When we finally reach the outside of the school I see Holden talking to some friends. He turns around and our eyes meet. Caroline watches the both of us with a smile on her face and walks over to Holden and hugs him. What the hell? There's this weird pain in my chest and I turn to walk away from them when suddenly everyone starts pushing their way back into the school. Being stuck in the middle, I am literally forced to walk with them.

When I make it back into the classroom i'm ready to go home. The drill wasted half the class so the teacher just let's everyone talk. Caroline comes in and sits next to me. I take out my notebook and start drawing a UFO. Caroline taps my shoulder but I ignore her. She clearly saw that something was going on between Holden and I and she hugged him WHILE HE WAS STARING AT ME. "Rachel i'm sor-" I quickly cut her off and get up. I know i'm overreacting but how many times has a cute guy actually given me the time of day? I never had anything close to that and I when I was finally close to it it was ripped away from me.

"It's fine. No really. Um, Mr. King could I go to the nurse's office please?" Mr. King looks up at me and nods. I pick up my bag and leave. I can't be near her right now.

I go the rest of the day avoiding both Caroline and Holden. I won't be made a fool of again. I refuse. When the last bell rings I make my way home. I cross the street when someone starts calling my name.

"Rachel please wait I need to talk to you," I turn around to see Caroline with Holden right behind her with a concerned look on his face. I turn back around and keep walking. I wish they'd just go away. A car speeds right past me knocking me off my balance I fall flat on my ass. I really need to watch where i'm going. Holden runs up to me and picks me up off the ground.

"Are you out of your fucking mind you could have been killed," he yells. I jump out of his arms dusting myself off. Why is he acting like he cares about me?

"I'm fine-would you just let go of me already. I'm in one piece calm down. Why don't you go check on Caroline or something," I pull out of his embrace. Caroline runs over to us and hugs me. I push her off. The last thing I need is a fake friend. I start to walk home again hoping that they don't follow.

"Oh for the love of god who knew you'd be this damn dramatic," I stop dead in my tracks. Did this bitch just call me dramatic? She doesn't even know me. I turn back around.

"First of all you don't know me s-"before I can finish my sentence she cuts me off.

"HE'S MY COUSIN," What? No. I glance at Holden who looks just as confused as I am. "I was going to tell you when we got back in the classroom but you walked away before I could say anything." my cheeks warm up. Way to go Rachel.

"I don't know what to say." I mumble hanging my head in embarrassment. By now we have a crowd of people around us.

"It's fine I understand. I would have reacted the same way," she says laughing at me. I highly doubt that. My cheeks redden even more. I am officially exhausted. After everything is straightened out I start to head home. Holden offered me a ride but I politely declined. I think I've had enough embarrassment for one day.

As I walk down the road to my street I get the strangest feeling that i'm being watched. I refuse to be that girl in the movies who turns around and stares her murder square in the face for twenty minutes and doesn't run. I quickly do a 360 without turning my entire body and turn back around. I was right theirs two men in a black van watching me from down the street. Good thing I watched all those thriller movies to know not to just stand there. I quicken my pace. I hear the motor of the van getting closer and that's when I break. I spot a coffee shop on the corner and quickly make my way inside. Who are they and why the hell were they following me?
