Inspired by the show 'Miraculous: The Tales of Ladybug and Chat Noir' this one-shot will feature Maxerica as crime-fighting superhero badasses.
The night air was still as I looked over the calm streets of Angeles. Nights like these are my favorite. No crime, no villains, no evil. Just quiet.
"Fancy seeing you here." I startle. Looking behind me I find Prince, my fighting partner, standing behind me. He walks over to the ledge where I'm sitting and takes a seat next to me.
"I like to keep you on your toes," I tease. I've only ever been coming to this spot every night since I assumed the role of my superhero persona, Virtuoso. He laughs and suddenly hops up.
"There's trouble," is all he says before he leaps of the ledge.I follow him off muttering below my breath, "At least warn a girl before you go flying into the unknown." But luckily we share one thing in common, our sense of danger, so it's easy to track where he's going.
I land with a delicate thud onto the pavement below and follow Prince into the crowded street where party goers are celebrating the newly reestablished Halloween Festival. It makes it easy for us to blend in and I spot numerous other Prince and Virtuoso lookalikes to almost feel flattered. The crowd flows like a river and I match my pace to Prince's. "So what is it tonight?" I ask.
"I can't put my finger on it but the air feels off," he says.
"The air?"
"You know what I mean," he responds, sticking his tongue out. Right then I felt it, too. A shift in the world.
"This way," I whisper and take a sharp turn down a narrow street. There's an overturned dumpster and a partygoer lying unconscious against a closed store. I check their pulse, "He's still breathing." Odd, the villain didn't leave any trace or clue about who he could be. Other than strong, considering the dumpster.
We continue down the street until a low laugh fills the air. In unison, Prince and I say, "South." He had been a routine pain in the ass but tonight was the last stand.
A voice taunts us from above, "I'm glad to find you two haven't lost your abilities to state the obvious." I look up to find South standing on the ledge of a crumbling building. Without warning, he lashes out, throwing the power of Wind and nearly-knocking us over.
In the next heartbeat, both Prince and I are scaling the walls. We climb to find South jumping from roof to roof. Prince throws out shafts of light but South easily avoids it, being used to our powers by now. Another shaft of light is beamed, throwing South to the left. But Prince is smarter this time and throws another shaft immediately after to the right, blinding South. I use the momentary lapse to sing out a sound wave both loud and high enough to shatter eardrums. South falls to his knees, hands pressing hard against both ears. He's gotten older and can't hold on for as long as he used to. We leap to where he has fallen, eager to end this feud.
Suddenly South jumps up, slamming a wall of Wind into Prince. "Prince!" I scream, watching my partner-in-crime meet the impact and go flying towards the ledge of the building. I deliver a swift punch to South's gut and go sprinting to my companion. "Prince! Prince! Oh God. Oh God!" I hold him up into my arms but he isn't responding. "Hold on, Prince. I'll be right back." I race back towards South and in my rage defeat him and the source of his power, a necklace in the shape of a spiral. The destruction of his power source knocks him unconscious and I'm not too bothered by it.
When I reach Prince he begins to stir. "Virtuoso?" He murumurs."
"I'm here."
"What happened?"
"Oh, South just knocked you onto your ass." He laughs a bit, leaning back with his eyes closed. "I thought I lost you," I say under my breath.
"What?"
"I thought I lost you," I repeat, louder this time."
"V," he begins but I begin to cry. Now instead of me holding him, the roles are reversed. "V, I'm sorry. I won't ever do that again." Through my tears I laugh and look up to his face, his masked face.
"Prince, I don't think I ever want to think about losing you again."
"Maybe, maybe it's time we reveal who are true selves are."
"But that's against the rules-" I start.
"Damn the rules. You mean more to me V than any normal partner-in-crime could." And with that he removes his mask.
"You're, you're Prince Maxon." I stare in disbelief. "I guess I should've figured that out sooner considering your superhero is Prince," I say with a laugh. I remove my mask, too.
"America Singer, the famous musician. Funny, your power is song and your last name is Singer and I couldn't put two and two together, either."
We laugh and the worry of what a reveal like this could mean melts away. "What now?"
"Now, I want to spend the rest of this Festival with the best woman in the world." With that we left South behind knowing from defeating other superheroes that when he woke up he wouldn't remember a thing.
