The wind is roaring as we head down the highway back into town. After surfing all day, I could really use some grub.
"Let's stop at Sue's" I yell over to Daniel.
"What!" He screams back. This is why I hate when he drives, he has a jeep and insists on driving with the top down at all times.
To avoid another scream match, I just text him. I know texting and driving is dangerous, but I know he's going to check his phone regardless.
After I hear the ping of his phone, I wait until he reads the message.
He doesn't say anything, but turns down the street that holds the best diner in town.
The first thing I notice as we draw near is that Sue's is packed. This is nothing new the restaurant is always packed, especially at lunch time. With food this good, people would be crazy not to eat here. We park towards the edge of the lot and make our way in.
As we walk in the grease filled aroma that I have grown to love fills my nose. I take my shades off and look for a place to sit. Looking around I'm not seeing any open seats, or familiar faces. Stupid tourists taking all the good spots. Some dude in a I love Florida shirt is in my usually spot.
"Stupid tourists taking all the good spots" Dan, mumbles beside me.
This is why we are best friends we think alike.
Ms. Sue's red hair comes into my line of vision.
"Oh, boys there's some seats towards the east end" she hollers "and tell your mama's I said hey!"
"Yes ma'am" we say in unison.
After we sit down and order our drinks, Daniel gives me a look and I know exactly what he's gonna say. Something about that stupid bonfire, he's been bothering me about it all morning.
"So, you're telling me you missed out on hooking up with Grace freaking Jackson because you have a crush on your neighbors, that hasn't even talked to you?"
"Yet" I add "She just hasn't got a whiff of my charm yet"
"Or she got a whiff of your pits and shes staying away"
I give him a blank look.
"Describe her to me again" Dan says.
I try to form an image of her in my head. Long legs, killer ass, radiant smile. My imagination must be pretty good because I swear I see her in the restaurant. I blink a couple times because it obviously can't be her. I have to be seeing things. It's her. Oh God, she's coming this way.
"Okay, Dan don't look now but she's coming this way right now" I whisper yell.
The freaking idiot turns around.
"I said don't look," I throw a sugar packet at him. He looks at me with a smirk. Whatever he's thinking he needs to stop.
Her dad spots me first.
"Viviane, this is that Phillips boy I was telling you about" he says, his voice as scary as I remember.
She waves at me and looks at me like she knows all my secrets. Or she's just checking me out.
I wave back and smile thinking about her checking me out. I can't break eye contact it's like I'm in a trance. Maybe I should say something she looks like she's ready to bolt.
"Oh, shoot where are my manners that's my best friend Daniel over there" I say pointing to the blond idiot across from me.
A smirk begins to form on his face.
