|Viviane|

After my shower I feel more calm and confident.
Dressed in my favorite floral dress, I check to make sure my hair is tamed. Feeling satisfied with my outfit I grab my purse and prepare to leave my room, when there is a chime from my laptop for a Skype conversation. Knowing that it could be No one but my best friend Michelle I quickly go to answer the call.

I am greeted with the sight of Michelle running back and forth across her room muttering something about it not being right.

"Umm, Earth to Michelle" I say with a wide smile on my face.

"Oh, thank God you answered V. I thought you would have already been off to breakfast with your mom, and if you were don't know what I would have done because I can't just call you with my crisis with her in the room, because I'm still pretty sure she hates, no I'm convinced that she's hated me ever since we were little..."

Michelle can rant all day and if I don't stop her I'm sure her face will begin to turn blue.

"....because I know you claim she doesn't have a problem with white people but you should see the way she looks at me whenever I'm at your house"

On that note I end Michelle's rantings, "My mother doesn't hate you because you're white, she hates you because you spilled fruit punch in her all white living room" I can't contain my laughter after that because Michelle freezes.

"That was in like third grade V, please tell me your joking" she whines throwing herself dramatically on to her bed.

"Trust me I am" I tell her looking at the mess her room is through the screen with articles of clothing thrown everywhere. Peering closely I see the top that I let Michelle borrow thrown across her desk chair. This is the same top she claimed she "lost".

"Hey, Michelle isn't that my shirt" I ask.

With my inquiry she bolts off her bed to her computer screen, "You've seen nothing " she says in a creepy voice throwing my shirt out of sight "and anyways I didn't call you to talk about a shirt I may have or haven't stole" I scoff at this " I just don't know what to wear."

This girl would be so helpless without me.

"Okay first you need to breathe" she takes slow breaths listening to my command, when I feel like she's calm I continue "Now go get your blue floral crop top, jean skater skirt, and white converse" as she goes to find those garments I glance at the time 6:45 I have my annually last day of school breakfast with my mom soon. I begin to feel anxious quickly masking my feelings when Michelle comes back to the screen.

"Omg! Thank you Viviane you're a lifesaver, what would I do without you"

"Thank god you won't ever have to find out!" I say with a smile. She looks at me quizzically, never being one to sugar coat she asks me what's wrong. I fight to keep the smile on my face, and with as much nonchalance I can muster tell her "Nothing I can't handle."

I know she didn't buy my avoidance "You know you can tell me anything right?" She asks.
I give her a quick nod "Of course," I hear my mother's heels come towards my door "but I have to go I'll see you in English." We bid farewell as my mother opens my door with a big smile on her face, I attempt to smile just as wide.

"You ready to go Viv?" I give her a nod and prepare myself for an awkward breakfast.

Breakfast has come and gone and I'm minutes away from having a completely silent car ride with my mom. Our meal if anything was awkward. It's never been that way before. We usually have countless things to talk about ranging from tv shows, to celebrities, she even tries to ask me about who my crush is. I didn't try to be short with all my answers, I really wasn't I wanted everything to be the same but my mother saying "I can't do this anymore" was echoing in my head with every word she said. And I couldn't help but wonder when things would take a turn for the worst.
