Hey everyone. This is my first story so please don't judge. I doubt anyone will read this anyway but still. Enjoy.

My left cheek is stinging. It feels as if a hot iron had branded my face. The throbbing is not going to subside any time soon. I wish he wouldn't hit me. I think sometimes he wants my boyfriend to find out he's been raping me.

Never in a million years would I think that moving into my boyfriend's house would be the biggest mistake of my life. About a year ago my father got deployed back to Afghanistan. Two months later my mother was hit by an oncoming car and was killed on impact. The closest relative of mine was across the country and the last thing I wanted to do was leave the school where my boyfriend and all of my friends are. So my boyfriend's parents said I could move into their spare bedroom until my father came home.

Wyatt and I have been dating since freshman year. Now that we're seniors, his parents have known me long enough that they are practically my second family.

After my mother's funeral, Wyatt's mother drove me to my house to pack my things. I had everything ready to go when I realized I had almost forgotten my mother's jewelry. When I was younger I used to always ask her for her rings and necklaces. She told me someday when I was older she would pass them on to me.

When I walked into her room to get her jewelry box, tears started to well up in my eyes. Some of my greatest memories with her were in that room. I walked past her freshly made bed, stroking the comforter with the tips of my fingers. The smell of her perfume mixed with cigarette smoke still lingered in the air. I always hated when she smoked. I guess it helped her cope with the stress of my dad being gone though. Her oak jewelry box with carving that said "All because two people fell in love", was sitting on top of her vanity. My fingers were trembling as I lifted the box. I turned to walk out of the room when I saw Wyatt's mom standing in the door way.

"I know it's hard Gionna. I lost my mother too when I was around your age." I couldn't think of anything to say so I just started to cry. She wrapped her arms around me and kissed the top of my head. "Come on. Wyatt has a surprise for you at the house."
