Brooke Elliot

I watched as all of the happy couples held hands and prepared themselves for the 9th grade homecoming dance tonight.

It's been like this ever since the beginning of middle school. Everyone gets asked out and brags about their relationship to the loners. I am one of those loners.

I'm the third-wheel whenever I go out with friends. Ya know, the one that sits there, scrolling through social media, looking at other happy couples, while the happy couple that you're already with completely ignores you.

I unlocked my locker and stuffed all of my books in it.

"Hey, Brooke." I looked up and saw my best friend, Hayes. I guess you could call him a "geek" He wears beanies and his Ray Ban prescription glasses along with skinny jeans, plain t-shirts, and Vans. I like that he doesn't care though. That's why we're best friends.

"Hey, Hayes." "Are you going to the homecoming dance tonight?" He asked "No," I scoffed while closing up my locker.

"I don't know, I might go." "Did you ask anyone?" I asked "No, but I might just go alone." "Isn't the whole point of going to homecoming to have a date there?" I asked "Yeah, I guess, but maybe I should stop being so unsocial." "You are social.. Just not very much with the popular kids." "Maybe I should be." "Please don't tell me you're gonna strive for popularity, then when you become popular leave me."

"Remember that time in 6th grade when I asked out Layne Miller and got rejected in front of everyone, but you were there to give me a pep talk while everybody else laughed?" "Oh yeah. That was the first time we actually talked." "Yep, and when we both get our 'glo-ups' we'll show them what they missed out on." He chuckled

Hayes doesn't get enough recognition. He's honestly really good looking, smart, and nice, but he's what people call a geek, and, you know how that goes as far as high school popularity.

"Since we're both not going to homecoming, do you want to hang out tonight?" He asked "Sorry, I can't. I have to wash my hair tonight." "It looks fine." He said while playing with a strand of my hair, "Hayes, I have some black people hair. My hair doesn't cooperate, so I had to refrain from washing it all week." I laughed

"Oh." "Yeah, we can hang out some time this weekend though." "Ok."
