I put my long, curly hair up into two-strand twists, hoping it would actually cooperate for once.

I got an incoming FaceTime call on my phone and saw it was from Hayes.

I pressed accept and left my phone so the camera was facing the ceiling because I knew if Hayes saw my hair he'd make some kind of stupid comment.

"Hey Hayes." I answered "Hey Brooke. Are you sure you don't want to go? It's not too late. It's just now starting?" "Hayes, there is no way I'm going. My hair is gonna get really frizzy. I can feel it." "Pleeeeaase?" He begged.

I finished putting on my makeup and slipped on a pair of black flats.

I cannot believe Hayes talked me into going. Since when is he into school activities like this?

I looked in the mirror one more time and I have to say, I looked good. My makeup was on point, my hair was actually cooperating, and I was just satisfied with the way I look.

My phone buzzed, indicating that I got a text

My phone buzzed, indicating that I got a text.

I'm outside- Hayes

Ok. I'll be there in a minute.- Brooke

I skipped down the stairs with my phone in my hand, and almost made it to the front door until my mom stopped me.

"Where are you going?" She asked "Um, there's just a little get together at school." I had to lie because of i didn't my mom would want to take pictures, go with me, and try to be a chaperone at the dance.

"You seem very dressed up for a little get together." "Mom, I really have to go. My ride is waiting outside." "Ok. Go ahead." She said then went back to what she was doing.

I walked out of the front door and saw Hayes leaning against a black Jeep.

I'm not gonna lie, he did look really, really good.

"You look beautiful." He said while opening the door for me "I look like I'm going to a funeral." I laughed "I'm serious. Your hair looks really nice too." He said "Thank you. You look good too."

"Where'd you get this anyways?" I asked while sitting in the passengers seat "Just borrowing it from a friend." He said then shut the door and jogged around the front of the car to the driver's side

He sat in the drivers seat and shut the door "Wait, you can't even drive." I said "I have my permit. Plus, I'll be sixteen in a few months. It's fine." He said then started the car.

We arrived at the school gym and it actually looked more fun than I thought it would be.

All of the guys were wearing pretty much the same thing- Khakis and a Polo shirt, while all of the girls had on different styles and colors of dresses.

I looked around and saw a whole bunch of girls eying down Hayes. They didn't seem to notice him this afternoon

About an hour into the dance everything started to wind down.

The music suddenly changed from Drake to slow music.

"May I have this dance?" Hayes asked with a goofy smile "You're so stupid." I laughed while taking his hand

He led me to the middle of the gym and turned back around to face me.

"Um, how do you slow dance?" He asked awkwardly and I let out a small laugh.

I took his hands and put them on my waist, and I put my hands on his shoulders.

(Not an expert cause I'm an actual loner so bare with me)

We rocked at the same pace with the music and talked about stuff we normally talk about. Music, shit about the people we hate, and all that stuff until I felt someone tap my shoulder.

I turned my head to see a somewhat familiar white boy.

"Can I have the next dance?" He asked with a wink

"I'm sorry, but I'm just here to dance.. With my date.." He nodded then walked away.

I turned my head back to Hayes and he looked just about as confused as I was.

"Who's that?" He asked "No idea. He's never talked to me before."

"He probably just wanted to dance because of how good you look in that dress." He mumbled "What?" "Nevermind." He shook his head.

We both decided to leave after a few more people started to act nice to us. We've gone to school with them for a long time, but they never seemed to notice us.

We picked up Chick-fil-A and were riding back to his house in this "loaned" car.

"You never actually see how fake everyone is until they see something they like." He shook his head in disappointment "Yep. That's why I stay away from the drama and petty ass kids." I said then ate another fry. He chuckled and grabbed one from the bag.

"Loners for life. That's the good life." He said while eating the fry.

"Yep."

It's unbelievable how much I like Hayes.

Just gotta make sure he never knows.
