"Hey Flick! Jasmine wants to know if you want to go out with her!" A girl yelled out from across the room as her friend (who Mei assumed was Jasmine) squealed and smacked her arm.
Mei twitched in her seat and tried to focus on the book that was in front of her. She couldn't even read half of it. She could speak English a lot better than she could read it, but her tics were starting to get bad and she needed to concentrate on something.
She and Flick had almost all of their classes together and that included free period as the last class of the day.
She stole a glance over to her right just long enough to see Flick sign something to the girls, a small frown on his face. She knew what he was trying to say. Good thing she had been learning sign language.
"I'm sorry, we don't understand sign language. Could you please say it out loud?" The girl yelled out again as Jasmine looked up with hopeful eyes. Flick's eyes widened and a look of anger spread across his face. Mei almost gasped out loud as she listened to the girl's request. Did she seriously not know that he was mute? Sure it had only been a couple of weeks since school had started but she had to know by now. Mei frowned and cleared her throat.
"He said he already has a girlfriend." Mei managed to squeak out as she stared into the pages of her book. She would have to ask Dylan for help on reading English later.
"And how do you know what he's saying?" The girl turned a glare onto Mei. " You can barely even speak English. Go the fuck back to wherever the hell you came from. Where even are you from? China or something?" The girl spat out again.
"I'm from Japan." Mei managed to say as her arm smacked into the table. She desperately tried to focus on the book in front of her. Tears pricked at her eyes. She hated when people talked bad about the country that she adored so much.
"Well then get moving you fucking freak." The girl spoke, venom dripping off of her voice. "And stop fucking twitching so much. What the fuck is wrong with you?"
Mei wasn't even able to respond this time. Her head jerked down and hit the table and she wrapped her arms around herself. Flick got up quickly and walked over to her before pulling up a chair and grabbing her into his arms. She wrapped her tiny arms around his torso and tried to focus on something, anything before the twitches turned into something worse.
Flick looked up at the shocked girl and her friend Jasmine before frowning and holding up his fist while simultaneously flicking his middle finger up. Flick was very thankful that there weren't any teachers in free period.
After a couple more minutes the bell rang and everyone got ready to leave for the day. Mei unattached herself from him to grab her stuff before grabbing his hand. Flick picked his stuff up and they walked out of the door and into the hallway.
"There's a club meeting today." Mei mumbled as they walked down the hallway filled with pubescent teenagers and yelling teachers. "I'll text Stevie and tell her I wasn't feeling very good."
Flick held up his thumb as a response as they walked out the front doors of the school.
The walk home was long and silent as Mei just stared at the ground and Flick just held her closer by wrapping his arm around her shoulders.
All of a sudden, Mei looked up and smiled. "I love you Flick." She said before looking at him. He smiled back and kissed her lightly on the lips before ruffling her hair and pulling her even closer.
He didn't need to say it for her to know that it was true. She wasn't pushing him to talk and he loved that about her. He loved everything about her, honestly. And she could say the same to him.
The rest of the walk home was silent.
