Three years later. Three floors down. Three deaths.
It seemed like some sort of trade. For each year she wasn't supposed to live, someone else died. Of course, that way of thinking was nonsense, Ruby knew that really. But it didn't help the guilt.
Trapped in cell three, deep beneath the ground, Ruby had entered an alternative state. Her restraints appeared unnecessary. She didn't flinch when they stuck in the plastic needle every day. She didn't even lift her head when the thick concrete door opened.
These people had made a mistake that would have made her smile once. But she was not Magneto. He was a character from a comic book. She was real.
