Natsu had trouble sleeping that night. He knew something was up with Lucy. She wasn't acting like her normal self. First, she ran away from the guild for a week without prior notice and ended up--who knows why--in the Appakache Mountains. Then, she left him again--without notice--to go on a solo mission that could be extremely dangerous. Didn't she know that he had been worried sick?
The day of the party, Natsu had been trying to speak to Lucy. He saw her when he first entered the guild, but soon everyone swarmed him and he couldn't make his way to Lucy. When the mob had cleared, he had searched the guildhall for Lucy, but she was gone.
"Lucy!" Natsu had rushed out into the night, calling her name. "Lucy! Where did you go?"
"Natsu?" Lisanna had called from the guildhall doorway. "Why are you outside?"
"I can't find Lucy!" Natsu had punched a wall. "I'm gonna go look for her," he had told Lisanna. "Tell the others for me."
"Natsu, wait--"
And he was gone.
For two days he had searched around Fiore with no success. He soon got news that his friends were helping him look.
Days passed. Natsu had finally decided that maybe, just maybe, Lucy wasn't in the city. So he searched the countryside.
He searched the riverbanks, he searched the forest.
Finally, he searched the mountains. As Natsu was walking toward the top, he had caught whiff of Lucy's scent and followed it. As he got closer, he had suddenly heard Lucy cry out, and alarmed, he'd rushed over to the place where she was standing just as the redness from her hands had been fading. When he'd walked up to her, she'd punched him in the face.
Natsu turned in his bed. Had Lucy developed a new power he didn't know about during the time she was gone? Something about her smelled.. off, but he couldn't put his finger on what it was. He didn't get a chance to ask her either because she kept running away. Maybe after this job, he thought, I'll finally get out of her why she'd been acting so weird.
The next morning, Lucy, Natsu, and Happy set out for the Mayor's house. The mist was still so thick that one could barely tell it was daytime, and they navigated the city with difficulty. But at last they reached their destination.
"It started a few weeks ago," the Mayor of Caligo said to them as a servant set down their tea, "that the black mist suddenly came out of nowhere. One minute it was sunny, and the next, a thick mist had enveloped the city. We think it is a curse that has been placed on us by the ancient goddess Hektas." She took a sip of her tea.
"Who's tha?" Natsu asked loudly.
"Well, our people worship the god Ra, the ruler of the sun and bringer of life. When the Earth was young, Ra once fought Hektas, goddess of chaos and destruction, over control of this realm, and Hektas lost. She has been dormant for centuries. But maybe now is her time for taking revenge."
"How can we help you?" Lucy asked.
"We believe that good will always trump evil in the end," the Mayor replied. "The cause of the mist must be somewhere in this city. It may be dark magic. Whatever it is, please find it and destroy it."
"I think that Rar and Hekta nonsense is a load of bullcrap," Natsu said once they had left the Mayor's residence.
"I'm sure they caused this mist by overpollution," Happy added.
"HAHAHA! Nice one, Happy," Natsu roared in laughter.
"Shh, you two!" Lucy scolded. "We're not here to question their beliefs. We're here to find the cause of the mist. The mayor said it could be dark magic. That means it's probably the type that Zeref was using. Ugh, it's so hard to walk around in this! Natsu, can you light a fire for us? Maybe that'll help us see more than two feet in front of us..."
Natsu obliged, lighting a decent-sized fire in his right hand. Some of the flames, however, were sucked away from his hand down the street and vanished into a crack in the road.
"What was that?" he asked in confusion. "Someone trying to eat my flames?!"
"We have to follow that route!" Lucy exclaimed. "There must be something strange under the city."
