Warning: If you really don't like NaLi you won't appreciate the start of this chapter LOL (even though Natsu's rejecting her). I guess you could just skip to the middle then ;P

Natsu lay in bed, thinking.

Yup, that's right folks: THINKING.

He was suspicious of Lucy. Something about her seemed off; he could tell by the way she smelled. She was also acting kinda weird, being all touchy-feely. However, he couldn't follow her. He was stuck in his infirmary bed, even being guarded over by Lisanna.

"Natsu, I'm so glad you're okay!" Lisanna cried happily, walking over to sit on his bed. "You don't know how we've all been so worried about you, love!"

Natsu sighed and ignored her remark. "Can I get out of this bed now?" he asked a bit impatiently. "This is somewhat ridiculous, isn't it? I'm perfectly fine and I need to find Lucy!"

"But Natsu," Lisanna reasoned, "until we can make sure that you're completely healed with no side effects, we can't let you go running about! You were on the brink of death!"

"Besides," Lisanna continued, "Lucy's busy right now. Why don't you just talk to me?" She smiled gently at him and lay her head on his chest. "Do you remember when we were kids, we would go down by the river to play? We'd gather wildflowers and fly kites with Happy..."

Lisanna lifted her face and stared into Natsu's eyes. Well she tried to, but... he'd fallen asleep and was snoring.

"Hiya! He fell asleep!" Lisanna sweatdropped. "Am I that boring?" T__T

-Meanwhile-

"Aha!" Lucy exclaimed in triumph as she pulled out a beautiful cake from the oven. "I told you I could bake it, Mira!"

Mira giggled pleasantly. "I never said you couldn't," she smiled.

"Erza, don't forget the dragon goes on center stage!" Lucy shouted at Erza as she passed by. "Levy, I'm counting on you to arrange the 'Welcome Back' banner! Happy, go get the firewood, will you? Natsu needs a good side meal of flames! And Mira," Lucy concluded, turning back to the white-haired mage, "I do still need your help preparing the rest of the banquet..."

While Mira started preparing some of the main courses, Lucy started decorating the cake. This one was made especially for you, Natsu, she thought happily as she spread red icing over it and wrote "Welcome Back, Natsu!" on it in yellow icing. Decorating the cake with dragon shapes made out of edibles, Lucy smiled as she thought about the look on Natsu's face when he came back to the guild.

It was finally seven o'clock. Lucy knew Lisanna was going to bring Natsu back now, and she was pretty satisfied that she had made the party a success, though she still waited anxiously for Natsu to arrive.

Just then the guild door flew open and Natsu, healthy as ever, walked in followed by Lisanna.

"SURPRISE!!!!!" everyone yelled and cheered.

A smile broke out on Natsu's face. "How great it is to have nakama," he said to himself as he walked into the arms of all the guildmates who were so happy to see him healthy and well.

"Wow!" Natsu exclaimed, suddenly catching sight of the banquet table and rushing over to it, "so much delicious food!" and started stuffing his face.

Lucy was smiling and about to walk over to him when she suddenly remembered--now she was different. She didn't have a heart, not like the rest of them... even though she had worked so hard for the party, she just wanted Natsu to be happy. So she stayed back, watching them from the sidelines, alone. She smiled sadly, tears leaking from her eyes as she slowly slid away from the rest of them and walked out of the guildhall.

You deserve to be with people like you, who will make you happy, Lucy thought. It's better without me. And she walked into the night, where she thought she belonged.
------------
Oh no! Is Lucy lost forever now? Will she run away? Or will Natsu stop her in time? I know this chapter was pretty much devoid of any NaLu moments, but they're coming in the next one, I promise! Stay tuned for the next chapter!
