I was at practice, we were on the back field behind our main one. Sam and I had just switched on the podium, I was about to conduct. I was waiting on the pit to be ready but I heard some people going up the steps of the stadium seats. I didn't look behind me, this was a dress rehearsal, I was ready and so was the pit.

After our closer, we marched off the field. When our director started talking to us from on top of the stadium, we had to look up and there was Mason. He was smiling and he waved, I shyly waved back.

"Andy, good job," that's all our director said to me.

We ran the show a few more times then stopped and were able to leave at 5:15. I found Mason's car and he drove me into the... Nicer part of the city.

"That was really cool," he said smiling but still looking at the road.

"Thanks." I didn't want to talk. I was hugging my backpack and shifting around. I was uncomfortable.

"I really like the marching band," he said.

"I really like the football team," I said.

We said nothing else. I was shaking but I don't think he noticed. I was calming down. I focused on my breathing and shakily smiled. Maybe this wasn't such a bad idea.
