Paige Sullivan (clears throat): I remember that night more than any other. I wish that the most horrible memories were not my most vivid, but such is life. I can still see colors, hear sounds and smell the grotesque odors from those few hours. This is the story as I remember it.
My little sister was hiding under the covers on my parents' bed in our one-room apartment. I was in the cabinet under the sink and I watched her from a crack in the cabinet door. My sister was lying completely still, exactly as our parents had instructed her to do. There had been a lot of violence in the neighborhood, and they had told us to hide if we thought anyone was coming to the apartment while they were at work.
There were so many noises....The sounds of pounding feet came and went all night. The door, which was right by the bed, opened and shut three times. I remember that I had sweat dripping all over my lips and into my mouth, but I didn't wipe it away. I knew that any sudden movement could nudge the cabinet door open and expose my hiding place.
Although the door to our apartment had been opening and closing all night, no one had stayed inside, so I was really surprised when I heard a female voice begin to speak. She said something like "Lights!" and her voice was very deep and raspy. Almost like that of a man.
I was really trying not to say anything out loud. I was trying to communicate, almost telepathically, with Erin so that she would be still. Don't be afraid, please don't be afraid, I kept thinking. Someone turned on the lights and I could see a little better. I looked to see if I recognized anyone from the apartment complex.
