It was Saturday. 11:00 pm. Me and Kathy hung out today for a little at McDonald's. She seemed a lot happier today. It's been a few months since I seen her so happy. She told me something today, something that made me feel amazing. She told me "I made her feel safe." Of course, it was my job to make Cathy feel safe. I loved her, and I knew I would always have to do this. But to hear her say it, just made me feel really good about myself
My phone started ringing, and to my surprise, it was Cathy. Something was wrong, she never called me.
"Hey Cathy? What's up?" I say casually, trying not to get myself worked up.
"L-look on my Facebook!!!" She wailed. I put her on speaker so I could go into my Facebook on my phone. I went on her page, and it was overflowing with comment after comment. They all said basically the same thing.
"Did you hear she likes Brian Reese?"
"Ew what would a skank like you thinking you could actually be with someone like him!?!?!"
" In your dreams you whore!"
I was scrolling down, comment after comment. Terrible words, after terrible words. Then I saw a comment from Brian.
"Ew you've always creeped me out. Stay away from me you nasty freak!"
Scrolling down and down, Cathy crying on the phone. I was speechless, yeah she got picked on. But this was bad, the whole school calling her nasty names. Then I got to a huge paragraph. At first, I thought it was someone defending her. But I was so wrong. It was Brian's girlfriend. The paragraph was full of the most horrible things. Something you would never ever say to a person. To sum it all up, she said "Honestly Cathy no one even likes you, or cares about you. Why don't you just do us all a favor and go kill your self?" This was too much. I know Cathy has talked about taking her life several times. But this just might push it over the edge. Especially since some of her close friends were even commenting.
"Cathy, stay on the phone with me, I'm coming over." She didn't reply, just kept on sobbing.
I grabbed my keys and left a sticky not to my dad on the fridge letting him know where I was needed elsewhere. I hopped in my truck, and sped out of the driveway and down the road. Cathy still sobbing.
" Cathy, please talk to me. Stay with me. I'm almost there."
She kept sobbing and sobbing. I turned sharply on her road. "Cathy I'm almost there."
"Damien! I can't do this anymore!"
My heart started pounding.
"NO NO NO CATHY STAY WITH ME IM ALMOST HERE!"
Click. Then silence.
"FUCK!!" I screamed.
I pulled into her driveway and jumped out my car. I ran into her front door, to see her mom fast asleep on the couch, a bottle of booze in her hand. Typical.
I heard sobbing upstairs. I ran up her stairs and into her bed room. "CATHY DON'T IM-". At the sight I saw, I collapsed to the floor.
She was wearing an oversized tshirt with shorts. Her hair all snarled, mascara running all down her face. Her small hands, holding a glock, trying to put a bullet into it.
"I CANT GET- IT WONT- THE STUPID BULLET WONT GO IN!" She sobbed slamming the bullet into the glock, trying to get it in.
"CATHY STOP!" I ran over to her and ripped the gun out of her hand, and threw it across the room.
"WHAT THE HELL DID YOU DO?!" She sobbed. I held her in my arms as tight as I could, she was struggling to go get the gun, but I wouldn't let her go. I was sitting in the floor, with her trying to crawl away.
"Cathy, I'm here. It's okay, please." I spoke softly.
"Damien, I just want to die. Just please let me die." she sobbed wrapping her arms around my neck and throwing her head into my shoulder.
"No Cathy, never." She slowly calmed down and we stayed like that for a couple hours. Tears slid down my face as they did hers. My shirt was now soaked from her tears but I didn't care. I almost lost her.
After 3 hours I picked her up and laid her on her bed, I tucked her in. And she looked sound asleep. I walked to the doorway, picked up the gun and was just about to leave, but then I heard Cathy say
"Damien, please don't leave. Stay"
I turned around and saw her face. She looked so hurt, mascara still running down her face.
"I will, but let me clean you up first."
I went into her bathroom and hid the gun in the cabinet under all the towels. I grabbed some of her wet wipes, and her hair brush. I walked back into her room and wiped all the makeup off her face. Then I brushed her hair, and returned all the stuff back to her bath room. I walked back in her room and she was fast asleep. I carefully crawled in next to her, and pulled the covers over both of us. I kissed her cheek before wrapping her in my arms. She sighed, and wrapped her arms around my neck.
"I'm glad I'm not dead Damien" she said into my neck.
"I am too Cathy cat, I am too."
