Catalina's POV

I sit quietly in the examination room, waiting for the test results. This test will determine what surgeries that I could have to eradicate my cancer. The door opens, and the doctors walk in. "Catalina, we have some bad news," my cancer specialist says.

I meet her eyes nervously and wait for her to continue. The cancer specialist continues, "The cancer has spread to your eyes. You now have two options. You can have surgery to remove the cancer, which means that you will be cancer free, but you will be blind for the rest of your life, or you don't have the surgery and die in a few months."

I think of Liam, who is waiting for me in the lobby. The doctors leave the room so that I can change out of the uncomfortable surgical gown that I had to wear for the test, and as I do, I start to cry. I don't want to be blind, and at the same time, I don't want to lose Liam. As I walk out of the room, I decide what to do. Regardless of what Liam says, I'm going to get the surgery.

Liam stands when I walk into the room. Worry crosses his face when he sees, my tearstained cheeks. "Catalina, what'd they say?" he says, wrapping an arm around my waist. I shake my head, not wanting to cry in front of people. Liam understands and stays at my side while I pay for the visit.

As soon as we get back to our flat, Liam takes a seat on our bed, and gently pulls me into his lap. "Catalina, what did they say?" he asks. I whimper, "The cancer's spread to my eyes. I can either get surgery or die." I curl up against Liam's chest, brushing my dark hair out of my face. Liam lays down, his arms keeping me close. "Everything's going to be okay, love, I promise," he says, gently pressing kisses to my forehead and lips. I quietly close my eyes, nuzzling closer to Liam and drifting off to sleep.

When I wake, Liam's still asleep. I slip out of his arms, grab my phone and step out into the hallway. I call the hospital and make the appointment for the surgery. Then, I return to our room. Liam's woken up in my absence. "Morning, love," he says as he rubs the sleep out of his eyes. "Hi," I say softly, "I made the appointment for the surgery." Liam nods, pressing his lips to mine. "When is it?" he asks.

I meet his eyes nervously. "They had an opening today at noon." Liam's eyes widen as he realizes that this is one of the last times that I'll be able to see him. He leans back on the pillows, taking my hand to bring me to his side. We spend a few hours cuddling before I have to get ready. I stand before my wardrobe, trying to remember what every item looks like. Liam smiles when I emerge from the closet in a cream colored sweater with black varsity stripes, black skinny jeans and silver ballet flats. "Here," he says, sliding a silver ring with Love is beautiful engraved on it in flowing, elegant script onto my finger.

"A promise ring?" I ask, unsure as to why he's giving this to me. Liam nods, and explains, "I know that you're scared that I'll leave you because you're going to lose your sight. And I'm not going to leave you because I love you, Catalina. I want to marry you one day." I blush at his words and kiss him. "Thank you," I say.

After we arrive at the hospital, Liam says, "I'll be there as soon as they let me in." I smile and look at Liam one last time. Then I turn away, the tears that are in my eyes about to fall. I follow the nurse out of the waiting room and into a private room where I change into the surgical gown and lay on the gurney. The nurse straps a mask onto my face and I drift off into nothing.

*SURGERY*

The first think I hear as I emerge from the blackness is Liam's voice as he does a livestream for the fans. "So the doctor's say that Catalina will be waking up soon. That you for all of your support, and I'm going to go now. Have an amazing day everyone." I hear the sound of a laptop closing.

"Li?" I ask, trying to take his hand. "Catalina!" Liam exclaims happily. "How do you feel?" I think for a moment, then respond, "Weird. It's odd not being able to see. It'll take some getting used to."

A few days later, Liam gets to take me home. I squeak softly as I bump into something. I feel Liam's arms wrap around me and I instantly lean back into his warm chest.

"Well here's a preview of the next few weeks," I joke, earning a laugh from Liam. "We'll get through it," Liam says running a hand over the ring on my finger. "I promise."
