Over the past month or two, I attended meetings of (what we decided to call) Dumbledore's Army. While it killed me to admit it, I actually was kind of enjoying them. So far, Harry had taught us Expelliarmus (when Cho wound up catching my sleeve on fire because, of course, Harry had walked past), Impedimenta, Reducto and Stupefy. It also allowed me in a way to grow closer to Cho, as we were doing this amazing thing together. Every time she congratulated me on doing a spell right, or gave me some sort of encouragement, with her trademark grin, my heart fluttered. Cho and I had just gotten back from a D.A. meeting, where we were reviewing everything that we learned so far. I was getting particularly good at the Impediment Jinx, and could bring people to a full stop for about 45 seconds. We arrived back at the common room. I knocked on the 'entry eagle's' stomach. "Can you name three consecutive days without naming any days of the week?" the eagle asked. Cho and I thought for a second. "Erm...oh! Yesterday, today and tomorrow!" I eagerly responded. "Very good!" the melodic voice responded, and the door swung open. We entered the common room. "Etta, I'm going up to bed." Cho told me. "Okay, I still have a bit of homework left, I'll stay down here for a little longer. Goodnight!" I responded. "Okay, goodnight!" Cho made her way up the staircase, where a statue of Rowena Ravenclaw stood. "Wit beyond measure is man's greatest treasure," I muttered. "Yes, because wit can solve all of your problems." I sat down at my favorite desk, located next to a window with a fantastic view of the Black Lake. Sometimes, when I have nothing to do, I go and stare out the window into its murky depths, and I think. Just think. Nothing more, nothing less. I grabbed and opened up my bag, taking out my Arithmancy essay. I pulled out my quill and ink, dipped the tip of the quill into the pot and began to write my conclusion paragraph. The common room was deserted, and it was very peaceful, just the scratching of my quill across the parchment. Just as I was about to finish, I heard a knock at the window, and I jumped. I looked outside and exclaimed "Amata!" My barn owl, who I named after my favorite of the three witches in The Fountain of Fair Fortune, was rapping on the window with her talon, a letter in her beak. "Mum!" I again exclaimed, as I saw in familiar cursive Miss Marietta Edgecombe, Ravenclaw Tower, Hogwarts written on the envelope. I opened the window, let Amata hop onto my finger and grabbed the letter from her beak. I tore it open, pulled out the letter and unfolded it. I began to read. Dear my sweet Etta, How are you doing? I hope your year is going well, as we haven't talked since September! While my mum and I are very close, she's not really one for writing letters, so we correspond once every month or two. Work at the Ministry is going well. Since Mr. Potorun's retirement, I've been promoted to head of the Floo Network Division! She works in the Department of Magical Transportation, and the boss in her division had just retired. It's a really great position, and it came with a very reasonable pay raise, enough so that we might be able to go to France over the summer! I know how much you miss the croissants :) My heart leaped. Ever since Dad left, money has been kind of tight, and we haven't been able to vacation anywhere for quite a while. We had gone to France when I was five, and I fell in love. I'm really excited about the thought of being able to see the Eiffel Tower, and visit Milan and just get to spend time with Mum. Now that I'm higher up, I get to see Dolores a lot more, and I love hearing how she's helping the school! I also heard that some students aren't happy with the changes that are being made, and they've formed some sort of rebellion! Etta, if you happen into any of those people, stay away! You can't have their poisonous beliefs corrupting your education! My heart sank, and I gulped. Imagine what Mum would do if she knew I was one of them, what she would say. She would be so ashamed... I choked back a sob, and continued reading the letter. Anyways, I hope you're having a brilliant year and that everything's going well for you. Write back soon! Love, Mum. A tear fell onto the letter as I read the last line, And PS: Tell Cho I say hi! I crumpled the letter in my fist and threw it across the room. Tears started to stream down my face as thoughts spiraled through my head. What would Mum say if she knew... But I'm enjoying it, aren't it?.... Imagine the shame, the disappointment... Cho wants me to do this and I need to be there for her, it's the right thing... But is it? I started to hyperventilate, and my stomach turned. I got up out of my chair and backed into the wall, sinking down, trembling. I hit the floor and buried my face into my knees. The next morning, Cho found me in the same spot, tired from a very fitful sleep.
