It was a beautiful March morning. Spring had started to come across Hogwarts, and the grass was starting to grow, the plants were starting to bloom and the weather was turning balmy. My mum's letter had been troubling me for the past couple of months, but I tried my best not to let it show. Luckily, Cho was wrapped up enough in her own problems to not notice mine. Anyways, so far today I had Muggle Studies, and I was in Defense Against the Dark Arts now. I looked at the time and realized that class was just about to end. Umbridge saw this as well, and said "Remember class, the essay on the distinction between a counterjinx and a countercurse is due on Thursday! Have a good day!" The class responded, almost in unison, "You too, Professor Umbridge," and proceeded to pack up their things. I bent down, grabbed my bag and started putting my things away. "Oh, and Miss Edgecombe?" she called. "Yes, Professor Umbridge?" I responded, my heart hammering. "Once you've packed your things, will you come up to my office for a second? Don't worry, I'll write you a note." "I'll be there in a second, Professor Umbridge." My mind raced, wondering what she wanted with me. Does she somehow know about the D.A.? She can't have, right? I put my book in my bag, shut it and slowly walked up the stairs to her office. I gave a quick knock on the door, and Umbridge called, "Come in." The office, like her, was sickeningly sweet and entirely pink. I wasn't sure there was a single thing that wasn't pink and frilly, except for maybe the plates. There were rows upon rows of plates hung behind her desk, all with some some sort of cat or kitten on them. Kittens in baskets, kittens at the beach, kittens sleeping. "Sit, dear." Umbridge snapped me out of my trance, and I took a seat in the chair across from her. On her desk was a lamp, some strange-looking quills and a tea set. "Would you like some tea, Marietta? May I call you Marietta?" she asked. "No thank you, I'm not thirsty, and yes," I responded. "Are you sure? It's earl grey," Umbridge asked as she poured herself a cup. "I'm sure, thank you though." "Okay." Once Umbridge finished making her cup, she sat up and looked at me. "Marietta, I've noticed that you've been rather distracted in my class for the past few months. I know from your efforts and from what your mother told me that you're a very hard worker, and I wanted to make sure everything was alright with you, as I can't imagine any reason why you'd just randomly stop trying!" She gave me a sympathetic smile. My heart started to pound again, and I glanced downward as I said, "Oh, it's nothing. I've just been worried about keeping my grades up." "Are you sure that's all, Marietta?" I looked up to see her staring at me. Those eyes, everything in them seemed to suggest that she somehow knew I wasn't being honest, they showed something cold and calculating, while there was a simpering smile plastered on top. "I'm sure, Professor Umbridge." She studied me for a moment longer, and said, "Okay! Well, you should probably get onto your next class, I'll write you a note." I gathered my things as she wrote the note, and she got up and followed me to the door. "Miss Edgecombe, one last thing," she said as I stepped out of the office. "Yes, Professor Umbridge?" "Remember where your loyalties lie," she said, flashing me a cold smile, and shut the door in my face.
