I sat on the edge of the chair, rolling my eyes. Another morning, where Kirito and I sit beside each other and say nothing. The two of us were never morning people. Especially to each other. When we even try to say anything to each other, it mostly comes out as spats or insults. So that's why we always sit and eat our breakfast in silence. Every so often our eyes would meet and we'd nod. It wasn't until later after we'd both finished our meals, and the rest of the group showed up, did we begin to speak to each other.
"You guys always get here earlier than us," Liz said with a snort as she sat down. Asuna followed behind her, plopping down beside me. The four of us exchanged tired glances, although Asuna was the most cheerful of us all. How someone could be this happy this early is beyond me. Kirito looked up at me, holding up a hand and pretending to stab his fork into his neck repeatedly. I laughed, almost choking back fits of laughter so Asuna couldn't see. But it wasn't good enough, because Liz grabbed his arm and elbowed him in the nose. The boy yelped, grabbing onto his nose and growling under his breath.
"Damn, Liz! You almost broke his nose!"
"That was the plan!"
Kirito rolled his eyes, uncovering his face to make sure there wasn't any blood. When he felt that he was no longer in danger, he lowered his hands and let out a huff. "So," Liz said with a grin, "What's the plan after school?" Kirito steals a glance at her, furrowing his eyebrows like she just insulted him. He was easily irritated and cranky when he's tired. But I get the exact same way. That's why we're friends.
"Kirito and I were going to-"
My voice trailed off as I watched my friend start waving his hands back and forth, shaking his head furiously. Raising an eyebrow, I began to change my words around. "I mean, I have lots of assignments to do," I mumble, shoving the rest of my breakfast into my mouth. Liz sat back in her seat, knowing full well of what had just happened. I'm not sure why Kirito was acting this way today, but I decided to go along with his plan. It wouldn't be the first time I'd gotten him out of the messes he makes for himself.
But Liz?
I thought they were friends.
"Alright, well, Asuna and I were having a sleepover tonight if you want to come."
Kirito shrugged his shoulders, completely thrown off from the conversation now. He seemed to be pleased with himself. Rolling my eyes, I nodded to her with a big smile. "Of course! I'll finish up and meet you guys later tonight," I responded, which received a smile from Asuna. The rest of the breakfast was less exciting. It mostly consisted of Liz babbling about a hot teacher she had this year, and also about some assignments she found grueling. Asuna asked me about my weekend and how I had spent it. Most of my responses included ridiculous shenanigans with my best friend and finding ways out of them. Last weekend Kirito somehow talked me into going to this strange ghost tour thing that ended up having us stranded in the middle of nowhere with spooky old buildings everywhere.
Kirito tried to scare me several times, but it backfired and he ended up falling flat on his face directly onto solid ground. After several minutes of laughter on my account, we somehow found our way back home. Not without a few bruises and freights. But, nonetheless, it was an extremely fun night. Kirito ended up staying over at my house, because it was so late that night. He slept on the floor, of course.
"That sounds like fun. I would've loved to see this idiot scared," Liz said with a smirk, pointing at Kirito.
"I wasn't scared."
"Dude, you were terrified. I think you cried for your mom at one point."
Kirito shot me a glare, which told me to stop talking. Asuna loved it, and she in fact wanted to go on another ghost tour with all of us. The idea sounded fun, but Kirito was already against it. He didn't want to relive that horror we went through. "Man!" Liz exclaimed, "We're late! Sorry to run, but Asuna and I gotta go!" Liz grabbed Asuna's hand, pulling her up from her chair. "Sorry guys! We'll see you later, y/n," Asuna said with a smile.
We watched the two dash off, Asuna tugging down her skirt as they ran. I laughed at her, screaming a short cat call at her as she ran off. "It's her fault for wearing such a short skirt," Kirito mumbled, cutting his eyes at me.
"I think it looks great on her. What are you, her mother? It isn't that short. I thought you guys liked that anyway," I teased.
"So what if I do?"
"Yeah, right. You wouldn't notice a girl if she sat in your lap."
"I'm not that oblivious," He mumbled.
"Yes you are! Remember when that girl from our class had the biggest crush on you? She sent you so many hints! She even sent you a love letter. You didn't even bat an eye in her direction."
"I just didn't like her," He said, "Simple as that. " I rolled my eyes, giving up on the argument. Kirito was a great guy. Several girls in our class and below and above have the biggest crush on him. I used to, as well. I'd never tell him that, of course. Sometimes I find myself getting lost in his words or his eyes. But I have to tell myself that we're just friends. And I like it that way. I really do. I love being able to laugh and joke with him. I never mind that it won't be more than that. But sometimes I can't help but wonder.
What if in the future, our hearts connect?
"Y/N, hello! You okay?"
I snapped out of my thoughts, seeing Kirito waving a hand in front of my face. "Yeah, sorry..." He sat back in his seat, still watching me carefully. I pushed my previous thought aside, wishing to get rid of it all together. I liked just being his friend. I liked not having any romantic affliction. I liked it this way.
"What was your deal today anyway?"
"What do you mean?" He asked, a mouthful of food. I chuckled a bit, sliding a glass of water in his direction. "Don't choke," I said, winking. Kirito tried not to laugh as well, cutting his eyes at me once again. After he was all settled with his food once again, we continued with our conversation.
"I meant with Liz. Why didn't you want her to know we were hanging out?"
"She always tries to force herself into our time. I just would rather spend it with you, that's all."
For some reason, that comment made my stomach flutter. The way he looked at me with those eyes, and how he only wanted to be with me. No, I said to myself, stop thinking like that! My face grew red, and I tried to hide the flustered look on my face. "Well, fine... But I'm sure she wouldn't want to interfere on our movie marathon," I said with a smile. Kirito laughed to himself, shrugging his shoulders. The two of us finished our breakfast, and then we left for school. We took our time, since we didn't have class for another couple of minutes. He wrapped his arm around my shoulder, pulling me close to him like he's done several times before. As we walked, He told me about the movies we'd be watching tonight. It was nice to see his face light up with excitement. This was the Kirito I loved to see.
My best friend.
The one I trust more than anything.
I don't wanna ruin this. I don't wanna ruin what special friendship we have with what might be a crush. I'd much rather just be a friend, then nothing at all. I'd enjoy just being with him and just being friends. I loved seeing him when he's excited. I loved being with him on strange adventures and getting to console him when he's sad. Kirito was special. Any girl would be lucky to have him. And I'd be lucky just being his friend.
That's right where I want to be.
Just friends.
