"Hell no," You hiss, stabbing your salad with your fork. Your best friend, Riza, (who everyone calls by her gaming avatar Liz), stares at you with a smirk. "Why not? He's single and pretty easy on the eyes," she says, knowing full well of your answer. She knew your feelings about a certain boy at school. She knew how much you despised him, and how you desperately tried to avoid him. Since you were friends with her and Asuna, it was a little difficult.
"I will not even consider trying to date that immature idiot."
"Oh, come on. Have you even talked to him?"
You nod, cramming food into your mouth. Kirito, a.k.a. Kazuto, was not your favorite person. You had your reasons, and no one ever asked you for those. It wasn't like you could justify them. Being around him just made you feel uneasy. Not to mention, you two never get along. The boy can never discuss anything that doesn't have to do with himself, his games, or other things that have no interest to you. Not that it means you should hate him. But you're very unforgiving when it comes to people. Once they rub you the wrong way, there's no getting on good terms. That's what happened with Kirito.
"I'm not discussing this with you again. Let's just have a decent lunch without his name ruining it."
"Whatever," Liz mumbles, taking a sip of her drink. The little restaurant is full of people in a rush for lunch. The bustling of feet and plates clanging together can be heard over your own voices. The two of you eat lunch here ever day after school, with the exception of a few off days every now and again. But so far, you haven't ran into one of those days. Sometimes you're accompanied by some of your other friends, but that's once every few days or so. It's usually just you and Liz, who happened to be your best friend for some time now. But today, she was slowly becoming your second worst enemy.
"I just don't understand why you hate this guy so much."
"You don't have to understand. Just respect it. We don't like each other. Simple as that."
"And you heard this from him."
You press your mouth shut, lowering your eyebrows in a tentative look. "W-Well," You stammer, "More like from an outside source." She laughs, falling back in her chair as if what you said was the funniest thing she's ever heard. Then, she sits back up and stabs a finger in your direction. "You, ma'am, are completely clueless," She says and continues to finish her meal. The rest of the time, you stare off to the side, thinking about what she had said.
She doesn't understand. She never will. I hate him and he hates me. Mortal enemies do not mix. They don't ever, under any circumstances, join together. Especially to "date".
The thought of that word sent a shiver down your spine. You shudder, slamming your utensil back into your salad. At this point, the poor mixture looks like it's been attacked by an animal. You find yourself ridden of your appetite, so you turn your attention to your glass of water. Liz starts rambling off about school, but you're not paying much attention anymore. It seems hard to focus now, and your stomach starts to feel nauseous. You groan under your breath, sitting back in your seat.
"Are you coming this weekend?"
"To what?" You ask. The girl in front of you tilts her head, raising her eyebrows. It's then that you remember. This weekend was the party. The party you'd been dreading for days. "Oh shit! No, I can't go. I've got tons of... chores," You mumble, "Just go without me." Your friend narrows her eyes, shaking her head. You knew it wouldn't be that easy to get out of it. But after the previous conversation, the last thing you want to do is go to a party and see him. Ugh, you think to yourself, why do I have to have so many friends. I should just get a cat and be through with it all.
"You're going. It might give you a chance to see that he's not all the things you think. All though, maybe a few things."
Liz laughs, smiling sweetly over to you. You knew that she was only looking out for you. She didn't want you to make a mistake or regret a decision. But she couldn't change your mind about this. You knew your feelings and they won't change after a single night. "Fine. I don't have much of a choice either way," You mumble, finishing your lunch.
The two of you paid for your meals, leaving the restaurant and heading towards home. Liz doesn't live too far from you, so you two usually walk home the same way. Today, she had to take a detour to go by Asuna's house to get some ideas for the party. You had to promise that you would come, and if you didn't, she could disown you as a friend. Even though you found the idea revolting, you didn't want to risk hurting Liz. You promised that you will show up, and began to walk home.
You always had this idea about Kirito. For some time now, you found yourself disgusted at the idea of any romantic relationship. When you first met him, you didn't hate him. You actually kinda liked him. But something sparked within you. Every time he spoke to you, it made your head ache and peaked your nerves. It became harder and harder to believe you could be friends. The two of you never got along, going back and forth, until finally you became enemies. You still had the same friends and same hang out spots. But you refused to be there when he was. You made your friends promise that they would honor your feelings, while still being true to them. It wasn't the best idea, but it was better than seeing him all the time. You didn't want to ruin it for everyone else.
So when Liz first mentioned the idea of dating him, the idea made you utterly disgusted. How could she suggest something so ridiculous? You two were polar opposites. Not to mention you were enemies! Enemies can't date. It defeats the purpose! But you eventually shrugged it off, since once it was shot down, she stopped talking about it. But it became a daily question. Like she was trying to hook you two up.
What kind of friend does that?
You sigh, opening up your front door and kicking off your shoes. Liz means well. It's also the second week she's suggested it. You decide to cut her some slack. She's just looking out for you in the end. Plopping onto your couch, you lie down and look up at the ceiling. The party would be a perfect time for her to try her magic again. If she seriously wants the two of you to date, she will try every trick in the book. You decide that you need to be careful at the party.
After all, you wouldn't want an enemy to become your lover.
